Hot on the heels of the cross country training sessions, David Morrison and Toby Hone will be launching threshold sessions on the first Thursday of each month, starting on 5 October.
The sessions are aimed at everyone across all abilities. Please wear hi-vis clothing and bring a headtorch if you have one.
So if you’re looking to supplement your training with what promises to be some fantastic varied threshold training, come along to Threshold Thursday!
What is a threshold session?
Also known as tempo running, threshold sessions involve running at a moderate to hard effort
for a longer period of time. The intensity of these runs are typically between 60 – 80% effort,
or a pace at which you can only manage a few words at a time between breaths (comfortably
hard). It isn’t as quick as an interval or rep on the track.
Threshold training is suitable for all ability levels and our sessions at York Knavesmire
Harriers are created and organised in a way which allows all to take part, no matter their
running speed or experience.
A warm up and a cool down are included within the session.
How does it help my running?
Threshold sessions allow the body to improve its ability to deal with lactate by training your
lactate threshold; the body can become better at breaking down increasing levels of lactate
to be used as energy, which delays fatigue in a race. In simple terms, this means you will be
able to run at a faster pace for longer before that classic heavy, burning leg feeling we all
experience creeps in.
When and where are the sessions?

Fell Training,Training
Off Road Training session organised by Tom Ratcliffe and Becky Penty.
All you need is some shoes you don’t mind getting a little dirty.
It’s a one off unofficial training session, a great opportunity to do something different and meet the fell running crew.
There is a strong likelihood we will head to the pub ( Knavesmire ?) afterwards.

Thursday’s sessions will move to the underpass on York university road for hill reps. These will consist of short, medium, and long hills. Threshold Session.
Hill reps help promote strength speed power and cardiovascular fitness.
Many runners only go on slow runs, staying away from speed work. While easy aerobic running is the basis of a training program, athletes can’t run slowly all of the time. Running slow all the time will just make you a slow runner. Once runners have a solid aerobic base of miles behind them, they need to incorporate faster workouts into their training program. Training using the whole continuum of paces, from slow running speeds to very fast speeds enhances both aerobic and anaerobic abilities. Fartleks, lactic threshold, intervals, and hill reps all can help runners learn a range of speeds and get FASTER.

Training
On Thursday 31 August we will be holding the Andy Neale relays, in memory of our former team manager and coach who sadly died in 2018.
The relays will be open to all club members of all standards with teams picked on the night based on handicaps, etc. So everyone has a good chance of coming away with the spoils! We will meet at 6.15 for a 6.30 start and the meeting location is at the corner of the wooded area where Knavesmire Road meets Tadcaster Road – basically across the road from Hamilton Panthers clubhouse.
The relays will be teams of 3 formed on the night based on everyone’s 10k time which allows for an even playing field. We will have our usual end-of-the-month social in the Knavesmire pub afterwards. This will replace the usual social run for that week.
In past years we have had a fantastic club turn out from newer members to older members and it would be fabulous to see the same this year! So whatever your ability please come down to the Knavesmire for a hopefully fine summer evening of running! All you need to do to take part is turn up on the night!
