Why run with Knavesmire?

I suddenly found a group who enjoyed the things I did… the sort of people I wanted to spend time with (Neil Holdsworth)

RACE REPORTS.

Shaun Lee Johnstone Memorial Multiterrain 10 mile

Sunday 5th Oct was a big day in the race calendar, The Great north run ,Harewood 10 and the first running of The Shaun Lee Johnstone Memorial Multiterrain 10 mile run .
The venue was just off the A168 near Boroughbridge with the start line under the A1,as the race says multiterrain you get the lot plus a good section of road down the main street in the village of Minskip, then its back across farm land ,trail paths on a reverse loop to the finish line .
Ray Johnstone who organised the event in memory of his late son ,has done a fantastic job . Well marshalled  with raynet support, water station with energy gels, a goody bag containing water, Mars bar, cap, hi-vis armband, running water/bottle, gels ,plus a nice medal.
At race HQ  Angela's cafe where the presentation  took place we all enjoyed tea/coffee and home baked cakes scones with homemade jams. We can recommend this race for  next year as a possible club run ,so give it a try.

Harrogate trail race(21.09.08)

The first running of the Harrogate trail race run a round the grounds of Harewood House on Sunday sept 21st,saw four members of Knavesmire Harriers complete a hilly course over tarmac narrow woodland tracks with some steep descents, trail shoes amust. The marshalling, organisation, markings and signposting was most detailed and specific, run by Pannel school ,kids fancy dress fun run before the 10k , organiser had them line the finish area cheering runners home with goodybags. Knavesmire had a good day with John Oliver coming home 1st in 38.47 with Pete Welsh in 2nd in 41.03  Andrea Lancaster 1st lady and 16th overall in 45.56 and Margaret Oliver 37th in 60.30 and 37 place in her 37 race this year. Hope if it is run next year more Harriers will try it?

Yorkshireman Half Marathon (14.09.08),
report by Jonny Hampton

Four YKH's took part on Sunday Gillian, Paula, Richard & myself.

At the registration in Haworth, tea, coffee and toast were on offer, always a good start, but when I met the others there seemed to be confusion on how far this 'half' was, as it turned out it was just shy of 15m, or if you were Richard, Gillian & Paula, a little bit over 15m with the odd scenic detour!

The weather was ideal, cool with sunny spells and a bit of breeze on the moors. The start took you straight uphill for about a mile from Haworth onto Peniston Hill, no easing into this race then! You followed fields, trails, tracks and streams to eventually climb up onto the open moors, where lots of bogs, mud, rock sapped the legs and made for hard going.

You were met by friendly marshals at a checkpoint handing out water and biscuits, before heading onto a road for a mile, which gave a small respite before heading back onto the leg sapping bogs of Nab Hill.  Eventually you descend into Oxenhope village and following the Worth Way back into Haworth, for a nasty 3/4m finish uphill on cobbles to the finish.

Soup and bread, with more tea & coffee and plate after plate of cakes with a nice tech t-shirt made this all worth while…All in all great fun, the organisation was fantastic, the atmosphere friendly. Richard put it straight to the top of his list of races completed and I recommend this race to all Harriers who fancy something different, there's also a full marathon option. Lets hope there's more than 4 YKH there next year!

So to sum up, For £10:

Toast, tea, coffee before
Soup, bread, cakes, tea coffee, juice after
Tech t-shirt & small goody bag

Results:
Me 2.33
Gillian 3.16
Paula 3.17
Richard 3.17

Race = 10/10

Swiss Alpine Marathon - D A V O S - 26/07/08

Report by Duncan Chambers

A number of Knavesmire runners made the journey to Davos for the Swiss Alpine Marathon on July 26th. The event actually consists of a whole range of races, including a 78 km ultra-marathon, two different full marathons and a half marathon as well as a Nordic walking event. All the races are mainly off-road and all are tough.

Barry Atkinson, Giles Hawking and Gerard Shipley tackled the 78 k race (K78 REPORT BELOW), featuring 2320 m of ascent and the same amount of descent, finishing in 8:18, 8:57 and 9:07 respectively. I can only take off my hat to them. I met Giles at the high point of the race and after a short break he soon overtook me despite having run 50 km to my 15 at that point...

Those for whom 42.2 km or 26.2 miles is quite far enough have a choice of races and four of us entered the K42, the highest altitude marathon in Europe.  This features a mere 1890 m of ascent; in fact from the start it is almost all uphill for the first 15 km to the high point at Keschhütte (2632 m above sea level). Of course there is plenty of downhill as well and some of the descents can be very rapid indeed if you’re not careful! My goal was just to complete the race and I was more than happy to finish in 5:41. Helen Leach, Paul Adams and Sue Adams recorded times of 6:28, 7:37 and 7:57 respectively. Other Knavesmire runners were Gary Huggan (3:13 in the 31 km race) and Caroline Warrington and Kathryn Wiggins (2:02 and 2:13 respectively in the K21 half marathon). Apologies if I have overlooked anyone.
The whole event features over 5,000 runners and is well organised and supported, with special trains and buses laid on for runners and supporters and ample refreshment stations, some offering massage as well as vast quantities of food and drink. Highly recommended for a running-themed break and there’s plenty in the area for non-running family as well; it’s a good idea to arrive a few days before the race if possible to get used to the altitude.

K42 report - Sue Adams

We are pleased everyone from the club had a good run.

I was delighted to complete the K42 with such little training after my stress fracture and Paul did a better time than last year which was good considering he had the 10 in 10 in his legs. For Helen Leach it was her first Swiss Alpine K42, she had a fantastic event pulling away strongly from us in the first climb up to Keschute with a finish time of 6.28 her recovery was helped by a leg massage at the finish. The event is very good value with the travel within Switzerland included in the entry fee and the Davos inclusive card giving free travel up the ski lifts etc.

K78 report by Giles Hawking

Barry Atkinson, Giles Hawking, Garry Huggan(K32) & Gerard Shipley before the start
It's approaching 8am we are in the Swiss Alp's, 1600m above sea level, a helicopter pounds the air above, stirring orchestral music from Gladiator blasts  out of the p.a system, and this is what I've been preparing for over the last six months.
I line up beside Barry Atkinson , ex Harriers Gerard Shipley and Garry Huggan (running in the K31 which starts simultaneously).
The K78 (49 miles) is the biggest mountain ultramarathon in the world with over 21km on high alpine terrain, attaining altitudes of over 2600m.

I
Challenges don't come much bigger than this but I cant wait to get going.  The music reaches it's crescendo, a cheer goes up from the runners amassed behind the start line and we are off.
The race begins with a long loop around Davos (alt 1538m), tourists and locals have all come out to cheer and the atmosphere is great. I catch a glimpse of Andy Bissell and Kate who have come to see us off.
It's early days however ,energy has to be conserved not spent. Barry, Gez and I maintain a steady pace as the race heads off the road into  alpine meadows and then into the forests lining the lower mountainsides.

Race starts at 8am

Early stages are quite gentle/fantastic running

This is the third time that I and Barry have taken part in this race. In 2005 we both finished but a pulled muscle ended my second attempt in 2006.
Previous Knavesmire K78 alumni include Ian Anderson, Sue and Paul Adams.
As we start to run our own races the trio begins to break up, first to fall off the York train is Gerard somewhere before Monstein.
My constant praise for the race talked him into doing it, but now as I look back over my shoulder and see him getting more distant I wonder whether I will be thanked at the end. There's still well over forty miles to go.

Church near Monstein - Beautiful scenery

A toilet break puts me well behind Barry and back with Gez, gradually I catch Baz up, aided by the slow Euro descenders who are holding Baz up as the race takes a steep downhill trail.
I run with Barry along the gorge from Monstein to Weissen. I know he wants a good time, if I can stick with him I should do well also.
I wont make the mistake of 2005 and speed off ahead early doors and run out of energy too early.

I followed in 2:28:39.(131st)

Feed station at Bergun, almost half way ,feeling good. Unlike two years ago when I beasted the preceeding Albula pass and left myself nothing for the rest of the race.

K42 race starts at Bergun, here the K42 leaders storm past me in the town.

After Bergun the climbing is initially gentle.
Thats a foothill in the background.

A stream of fresher limbed K42 runners (blue numbers)  pass me as the climb begins.
The unrelenting ascent soon grinds them down.
We all form a long power walking train up the mountain

One of five Feed Stations on the climb of Kescchhutte. I counted them off to break the distance up.

Does it ever end?

The Refuge atop Keschhutte finally comes into view, as does a Harriers vest in the stream of racers ahead of me, could I be catching Baz up?

Helicoptors swept along the valleys supplying remote feed stations, airlifting the injured and filming the event, adding to the spectacle.

Baz first Harrier to the top of Keschhutte.

KESCHHUTTE
(Alt 2632m Dist 52.9km /33 miles)
Barry Atkinson was the first Harrier to make it to Keschhutte  . He covered the 21k and 1600m climb between Filisur and Keschutte in 3:01:26.
I took 3:22:26
Almost there, only one zig zag left. There may be 18 miles left but getting to Keschhutte is a big psychological boost, its the highest point of the route (2620m)
The elusive Knavesmire vest which took some catching turned out to be Duncan Chambers in the K42. Great to see a familiar face.

Duncan kindly took my picture at Keschhutte.

Duncan leaves the feed station, glacier in background.

Duncan begins his descent from Keschhutte

Races split at head of valley.
K78 traverses Panorama Trail along side of mountain in distance.
K42 drops to valley bottom (alt 2192m) before climbing Scalettapass (alt 2606m Distance 60k/37.5 miles) where they re-converge.

The Panorama Trail , the views are fantastic on this 4 mile stretch, but the likely death/multiple broken bones from slipping off the treacherous path caused by too much gawping would not be.
Durrboden. (alt2007m dist 64.4km/40 miles)
The mountains are behind us now, just 9.5 miles of gentle downhill back to Davos.
I got a bit confused and thought it was 10k, roared off from feed station thinking I could hit my target of 8h30mins. Feel fantastic, overtaking everyone (K78 & K42)
Thirty minutes later (at about8h15m) I see this sign and realise my mistake, still along way to go. What energy I had left vanishes, still running but only barely. Now I'm been overtaken by all my conquests.
Barry finishes in 8h:18m:17, a new PB and fantastic achievement. 92nd overall and 14th in his age group.
Entering the athletics track for the finish. Spurred on by new target of being under 9 hours I finish in 08h:57m:36s.
DAVOS - FINISH

Barry Atkinson finished in 8:18:17, covering the final downhill segment from Keschutte of the race in 2:40:09.

I finished in 8:57:36,  covering the final downhill stretch  in 3:07:33.

Fell Running in Spring 08

Its been a very busy Spring on the fells. It started back in mid April with the Gisborough Moors race (12m, 1800') in North Yorkshire. Dave Eiser was 4th in 90.28, Barry Atkinson was 9th overall and second in his category, Janet Cordingly was third in her category.

The Three Peaks race took place at the end of April. The race, which climbs Pen Y Gent, Whernside and Ingleborough, was this year a counter in the English Fell Championships and doubled as 2008's World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge race. As such, the race attracted a large number of very good runners who tackled the 24 mile route with 4,800' ascent. The women's race was won by Czech Anna Pichtrova and the mens by Scot Jethro Lennox. For Knavesmire, Robyn Oldham finished in 4 hours 46mins, Baz was 230th in 3:58, and Dave 81st in 3:30. Picture left shows Baz coming off Ingleborough.

On May 11, Dave Eiser and Alayne Finlay tackled the Buttermere-Sailbeck race. This turned out to be a real grueller on a baking hot day with 4,700' climb in just 9.5m. There were very few 'runnable' sections for runners used to training along the banks of the Ouse, as the race took in Knott Rigg, Causey Pike, Sail, Crag Hill and Whiteless Pike. Both of us finished looking a bit shell-shocked - it took Dave 1:50 (for 9.5miles!) who finished 24th, and Alayne finished 131st in 2:29.  Pictures left and right are taken at Ard Crags (courtesy of Borrowdale FR).

At the Jack Bloor race on Ilkely Moor (5.2m, 1150') on 13th May, Johny Kendall had a good run to finish in 24th place in 45:23, while Josh Beech finished in 50th. Aislinn Austin was 10th lady. Lizzie Adams won the women's race in 47.56 - but unfortunately she was wearing her Hallamshire vest!

Four of us tackled the Fairfield Fell Race (9.5m, 3000') on 17th May. The temperature was ideal for running, although the cloud was down at around 700m which spoiled the view from the tops! Dave E 19th, Barry 81st, Alayne 22nd lady and Caroline Warrington 35th lady. Pictures below show Alayne and Caroline on the climb.

Black Combe - 8th March

Congratulations to Lizzie Adams who, in her first race in a Knavesmire vest, finished 6th in this tough Lakeland fell race. The race was the first of the series of six races which will form the English Fell Championships in 2008, and consequently there was a very strong field. The 8 mile race included 3000 feet of climbing, and runners also had to contend with a hailstorm during the final descent!

Ilkley Moor - 24th Jan

We had run in the National x-country championships the day before, so I'm not sure why we thought it would be a good idea to get up the following day and do Ilkley. Only 5 miles but a tough race, with rocky sections and plenty of sapping bogs. The pictures below show Ian Bithell (6th in category) and Alayne Finlay (15th lady); Dave Eiser was 9th.
