Guy Fawkes 10 mile - 03/11/08
report by Graeme McAllister

The cold weather didn't keep the runners away from this, the 25th annual Guy Fawkes 10 mile race in Ripley, just North of Knaresborough.  I first ran this 3 years ago (pre-YKH) and remembered it as "pretty hilly" - a case of selective memory, I think!
Out of the 800+ runners (this was the first year it was full before race day) that went round the undulating Nidd valley course, 23 Harriers (14 men and 9 women) braved the Birstwith Brute - a slog of a hill just at the half-way point - and the Hampsthwaite Howler (named that one myself!) to the very pleasant finish in the grounds of Ripley Castle. The general opinion was of a very enjoyable, if tough, race. And the goody bag was fantastic!! Full results are here.

Dublin Marathon - 27/10/08

Once again a fun few days were had by some of the Harriers annual trip to Dublin. For those of you thinking of doing a marathon for the first time, the Adidas Dublin is ideal and even more so next year as it’s the 30th Anniversary. If you require more information on where to stay, flights and entry information just email Michelle Atkins.
New member Sean McDermott had an amazing run coming 205th overall with a time of 2.58, this was part of his training for the London Marathon. Jane Shelmerdine did a smashing time of 3.34, in fact an excellent time considering she only just managed to get on the plane and ended up been sick 9 times during the Marathon. A first time marathon was completed by Viv Fraser in a respectable time of 5.33 – congratulations and she’s now got the Marathon bug and entered the Edinburgh with a few other members. Dick Hunter kept it under 4 hours with 3.53, Paul Adams (5.05) lead the whole way then got passed by Sue Adams (5.04) on the last couple of miles beating him by one minute. Michelle Atkins was looking for 5 hours but forgot to eat breakfast and realised at mile one when she got sniff of bacon cooking it was too late and made a grab for anything supporters were eating, but too late the energy started to run out by mile 16. Jean Snelling and Julie Rookes did a sprint finish for the line with just 2 seconds between them (5.46) and Neil Kingham in 6.15.

Foston & Thornton-le-Clay 10k – 04/10/08
report by Graeme McAllister

I must admit to having to get the map out to find Thornton-le-Clay before I set off (it’s just off the A64 on the road to Scarborough), but I’m glad I did.  This was the first time Easingwold Running Club have organised this race, but on the evidence of this year, it will hopefully become a firm feature of the Yorkshire race calendar.  A small race field (130ish) made for a friendly atmosphere at the start, helped by a performance by the local Morris Dancing “squad”, some of whom also took part in the race.
The flat, quiet route took in the villages of Flaxton and Foston before finishing back in Thornton-le-Clay in the local school field, where prizes were dealt out in eco-friendly goody bags.  The marshals were frequent (numbers to rival the Brass Monkey) and very supportive (although one did shout out “Well done – you look very calm…” as I ran past – bit confusing!).
There wasn’t a huge turn-out from the Harriers (the brave few are listed below), especially with the Great North Run the next day, but hopefully that will change in the future.
All-in-all, a race I’d recommend for those looking for a friendly race and different scenery (think Easingwold without the hills!) without having to travel for miles.

Darlington 10k - 10/08/08
report by Richard Gott.

Bill Shiveley Knavemire's no'1 'Hasher' and York Postal supremo donned the Harrier's vest at the Darlington 10k road race.
Having got out his CAMRA Good Beer Guide for the 'toon' of Darlington Bill decided Bill decided to make up for the beers that the local Quakers had not embided in the past.
Bill's thirst for a post race drinkie spurred him on to finish third vet (M45) in a time of 36:33, on the undulating course.
Bill was last seen outside the Dolphin centre checking his Public House batting guide, hope he got the south bound train.
Also running were
Alaistair Macleod (44:30) and Richard Gott (49:33).

Hebridean Islands.
The 24th of May saw the start of a busy racing calendar on the Hebridean Islands with the Point1 Callanish Marathon & Stornoway Half Marathon on the Isle-of-Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Although a wee bit breezy conditions were generally very good considering its rather exposed, albeit stunning location. I ran the Stornoway Half as the first fixture in a 5 race series (Heb 3 Challenge) finishing 32nd with a time of 1:44:07. Second half of the race was particularly tough on track & trail in the hilly Stornoway Castle grounds.

Duncan Chambers put in a brilliant performance over the weekend finishing the Point1 Marathon 24th with a time 3:55:54. He then went on to run the North Harris Marathon 24 hrs later on the Isle-of-Harris finishing 14th with a time 3:49:18 giving him a very creditable 9th overall place in the Two Marathon Challenge.

Can really recommend making the effort to venture north to compete in these races, the scenery is breathtaking and is complemented by the extremely warm welcome you receive by the Islanders.

Success in Paris for York Knavesmire! (from David Darton)
David (Darton), Colin (Lea), Garry (Moss) and Martin (Smith) all ran in the Paris Marathon on Sunday. Martin and Colin ran exceptionally well after a lot of hard training (Martin ran 200 miles in the last month). Martin in his second marathon beat his previous best by 25 minutes to finish in 3 hrs 25 mins 28 secs. Colin beat his personal best by 9 minutes, completing in 3hrs 31 mins 05 seconds. David, having had 5 weeks off training due to breaking ligaments in his ankle in January also managed a personal best of 3hrs 42 mins 51 seconds, a minute faster than at Paris last year. But perhaps the hero was Garry, who despite very bad archillies injury that has caused problems all year, managed to stay running for 5 hours 40 minutes and beat the odds by completing (after the crowds insisted he go on when he felt like stopping at 26k. We were all helped by better running conditions than last year - 7-8 degrees celsius with only slight wind, compared to last year's heatwave of 28 degrees. David is now recovering to run the London Marathon next Sunday - two marathons in a week - it shows what you can achieve when running with the encouragement and support of a club like York Knavesmire!

East Hull 20 - 9th March 2008
Cameron Brookes had a storming run at the East Hull 20 race, finishing in 1:48.03 and in smashing the course record (the previous best was over 1:50).

In the team race, Knavesmire men finished second. Running conditions were ideal, although as always on this exposed route, the wind was noticable throughout most of the 2nd half of the race.
