Vets Races '08 - REPORTS

Vet’s Grand Prix Series. Race 10

Spen Stadium 11th November

Victorious Vets

With nearly 200 runners completing this last challenge of the 2008 series the race for honours was well and truly on. The attendance record for these events was broken for the second time this season mainly due to the considerable turn out by Pudsey Pacers, the competition leaders (and our main competition) who we have chased all season.

The new 5.5 mile course provided a typical mixture of hill torture together with a few too many stiles and of course the obligatory mud but all was quickly forgotten after we were all amply fed and watered. (All for just a £2 entry fee!)

A great turn out of hardened Harriers produced a considerable number of points with a number of individual prizes on the day including:-

Kate Nelson 2nd lady/1st F40
Margaret Metcalfe 1st F55
Jean Snelling 1st F70
John Oliver 1st M50
Special congratulations to Jean who also won her category for the whole series.

As a result of all this years efforts by one and all our ladies team secured the series team prize for the ‘rest to count’ category. This category recognises the dedication of all those who regularly take part and run for their team so a huge thank you to all our regulars who have participated in the years adventures. In a season beset with injuries and illness it was great to welcome back Janet Cordingly and Carol Butterill and to hear that Fiona Strange is on the road to recovery.

The mens team has gained momentum as the season progressed with some outstanding individual performances. If we can start 2009 with a strong team the men should be in the running for prizes next year.

After another challenging and thoroughly enjoyable season we look forward to seeing you all and hopefully some new faces at Horsforth on Sunday 1st February for the start of the 2009 series.

Individual race and all vets competition details can be found on the Knavesmire website or alternatively at www.yvaa.org

Vet’s Grand Prix Series. Race 9

Starbeck - August 21st

Another fantastic turnout for both the men and the ladies. Team YKH is really pulling together. The last two races in particular have made a big difference to the team results and bodes well for 2009 and for the race at Spenborough on 9th November.

A number of runners whose first took part at the Knavesmire race came along for another go but instead of baking in the heat found themselves slithering in the mud. The wet conditions certaily provided us with a very interesting race. Our first timers for 2008 included Patricia Gill, Irene Welbourn, Peter Welsh and Martin Medlar. Peter Welsh got off to a storming start by winning 2nd prize in his age group. Martin was running his first race of 2008 having finally recovered from his injury. He has been a fantastic support at all of the vets races this year and it was great to see him back running again. Unfortunately Maureen Medlar has developed an injury so the two of them swapped roles for the night. There are suspicions that they only have three legs between them.

Our prize winners, in addition to Peter Welsh, were Kevin Langan, Jean Snelling and Margaret Metcalfe who all finished high up in their age groups.

The mens team have shot up the lists and are holding 6th place in first 4 to count, 5th place in the all to count and 5th place in the newly introduced rest to count. The rest to count category is simply the first 4 to count deducted from the all to count.

The Ladies team are still in second place in the all to count but have closed the gap on Pudsey Pacers leaving a difference of only 120 points. Horsforth ladies are a very close 3rd so we need a good turn out at Spenborough to keep our second place and make a final push for first. 120 points is certainly acheivable. The last to finish runners usually earn between 40 and 50 points so 3 extra runners who just enjoy taking it steady at the back could be all it takes to put us in first place. We are also 3rd in the Ladies first 4 to count so thank you to our faster runners. In the new category of rest to count we are sitting in first place.

The next Vets Race is at Spenborough on November 9th which is a Sunday. Please put it in your calendars and do your best to turn out. Make sure you rope in as many people as you can. Its a team effort that rewards sheer persistence from runners of all abilities and the perfect opportunity for all of us to be part of a winning team!

Vet’s Grand Prix Series. Race 8

Knavesmire – July 30th

Typical – a warm sunny July evening and out swarm the ‘Wasps’!

No nasty stings on this occasion however just an amazing turn out of Harriers for this the 8th race of the series.

A record number of 184 runners completed this race with approximately 1/3 of the ladies and 1/5 of the men racing in our Knavesmire vests!

With the reputation of being one of the flattest and hence easiest races of the series we are pleased to report that the introduction of an uphill finish proved an additional challenge to the opposition.Flying home as first lady Kate Nelson continued her winning streak and on her second vets race Jane Shelmedine was second home in her age group. Andrea Calladine was second lady home over 35 and Jean Snelling once again won in her age category.

Bill Shively led home our mens team securing a second place in his age group. Both Kevin Langham and John Oliver ran well to achieve 3rd place in their respective age groups.
Thanks to the magnificent turnout we amassed an astounding number of points which have moved our Ladies team up to 3rd position in the 1st to 4th To Count and 2nd in the All To Count competitions. Our mens teams now hold 7th and 6th positions in their respective competitions.

In an attempt to avoid an ‘Oscar’ winning speech can I just say thanks to one and all for their collective participation. We hope you all enjoyed yourselves and we look forward to seeing you at the next race on the 21st August at Starbeck.Individual race and all vets competition details can be found on the Knavesmire website or alternatively at www.yvaa.org

Vet’s Grand Prix Series. Race 7

West Vale - July 16th

Thanks to a great turn out the Harriers amassed a grand total of 1240 points in this 7th Race of the series.

We were looking forward to the challenge of this completely new race in this competition and we were not disappointed.

To reach the race start there was a ‘warm up climb’-discussions thereon ranged from altitude sickness to mountain goats! The narrow precipitous tracks, slippery downhill stretches and one very long hill climb resulted in a few trips but we all finished safely with time enough to enjoy the hot soup and rolls provided at the buffet.

Great runs once again by both Kate Nelson achieving first lady home and by Jean Snelling for gaining first place in her age category. Special congratulations to Jane Shelmerdine for gaining a 3rd place prize in her age category in her first ever Vets run.

Our small but select mens team was headed home once again by Duncan Chambers followed closely by Ian Bithell. All looking good for the next race -

Vet’s Grand Prix Series. Race 6

Honley - July 6th

Sorry that this race report is late but both Jane and I were foolish enough to complete this race after doing the Burn Valley half marathon the day before and we are still in recovery!
A rather grey and miserable morning greeted the Harriers team who decided to turn out for this Sunday ‘stroll in the park’.
Not a race for the feint hearted this event promoted yet another outstanding performance from Kate Nelson in a time of 38.21 once again being the first lady home.
Richard Gott, Ian Bithell and Mark Sullivan all ran well continuing to gain much needed points for the men's team event.
On her return from illness and injury Jean Snelling chose the hardest race of the series to once again secure1st place in her age category. Good running too by Rachael Sullivan Michelle Atkins and Rose Kee all helping to keep up the ladies challenge in the All to Count competition.

Well done and a special thanks to Ian and Neil Sullivan for their support – I hope they enjoyed the wonderful chocolate cake! Apologies to Jane and Rose for eating the last piece!

Individual race and all vets competition details can be found on the Knavesmire website or alternatively at www.yvaa.org

Vet’s Grand Prix Series. Race 5

Meanwood - June 17th.

Due to the clash with Bishop Wilton Summer League  it was a small but merry contingent that set off to Meanwood for the 5th Vets race of the Grand Prix series. Flying the flag for the men, frequent Vets runner Duncan Chambers was the first York Knavesmire Harrier home, followed soon after by Fiona Strange who despite taking two tumbles on this very tricky course, achieved an enviable time of 34:24 and finishing as 6th Lady earning 94 points. You just can't keep a good runner down.

We were all delighted to see the return of Jayne Fligg who after completing her first Vets Race at Pudsey last week had declared us all mad and had sworn never to return. Once she learned that her efforts had earned York Knavesmire Harriers a much needed 57 points she decided it was worthwhile giving it another go. Glad to say she completed the Meanwood course with a big smile on her face as did first timer Vivianne Fraser.

York Knavesmire Harriers are still in with a chance to win a number of awards in this series and we hope to see many more of you at Honley on Sunday 6th July for an 11.00am start - only £2 to enter and no need to pre book.

Vet’s Grand Prix Series. Race 4

Pudsey - June 11th.

This 4th race of the vets Grand Prix series was a real toughie!

With almost perfect (running) weather our teams arrived to find that the new course started with a trek of about a mile and a half to the start! Well it was a good warm up!

With a fast dusty downhill start followed by two laps of tricky woodland trail and ‘THE HILL’ to finish this was a challenging run successfully completed by all our runners. Kevin Langham was our first runner home gaining 17th place overall in a time of 32.39.

Yet another win for Kate Nelson who once again was the first lady home in a time of 33.16.

It was great to see our new ‘world champion’ Michelle Atkins back in action for the first time since competing in the 10 marathons in 10 days challenge.

Thanks to all those who managed to get to Pudsey we accumulated more valuable points and are still putting up a challenge in the all to count competitions.

The next race is at Meanwood on Tuesday the 17th June. Unfortunately this race clashes with Bishop Wilton summer league but there are a few vets intending to run one of the best races of the series so if you can make it please contact Jane Hartas for more information.

Vet’s Grand Prix Series. Race 3

Walton - June 1st

Heavy snowfall in February prevented the Knavesmire Vets teams from attending the 2nd GP race in February - hence no points.

This blip has however has been rectified by both teams at Walton on Sunday. The rather wet and muddy conditions did not dampen the enthusiasm of our intrepid teams with the 6 man team achieving 887 points and the 9 ladies 731points.

Once again Kate Nelson led our ladies team by winning the ladies race and was well supported by Margaret Metcalfe who won her age category in her first ever Vets race. A welcome return was made by Fiona Strange who recovering from injury gained a creditable 3rd place in her category as did Maureen Medlar in hers. Pat Rowson also returning from injury collected first place in her age group.

Well done to all our ladies, as there were a number of strong individual performances, which earned us valuable points.

For the mens team Bill Shively ran well to finish 12th overall and achieve a 3rd place in his age category. The remainder of our small but very capable team of male Knavesmire runners achieved an excellent team score against very strong opposition.

All these hard earned points will help to maintain and/or improve both teams’ positions in their respective leagues. As every eligible runner scores points you too could join us. The next race in this year’s competition is at Pudsey on the 11th June. This is a new course so could be interesting! Race entry is only £2 and includes food and good company!

Individual race and all vets competition details can be found on the Knavesmire website or alternatively at www.yvaa.org

Yorkshire Veterans Cross Country Championships - 13th January

Eleven Knavesmire Harriers took part in the Yorkshire Veterans Cross Country Championships on 13th January at Keighley.
All ladies and men 0/70 ran 5K.  Harold Dobson once again won the Gold medal in the M/70 catagory completing the undulating muddy course in 25 minutes and 30 seconds. Also running 5K were Fiona strange ( F/40-25:30) and Margaret Metcalfe (F/55-30:39)
Knavesmire men's 0/40 team running 10K won the bronze team medals in their age group for the second year running.  Barry Atkinson was first Harrier home in 24th place with a time of 36 mins and 39 secs closely followed by Kevin Langan (35th-37:20),Neil Strange (36th-37:25) and Bill Shiveley (47th-38:18).
Other finishers in the 10K were John Oliver (M/50-39:39), Duncan Chambers (M/45-43:47), Ian Bithell (M/60-45:49), Richard Gott (M/50-50:55).

VETS GRAND PRIX RACE SERIES: Race 1 Horsforth Sunday 3rd February

Thank goodness the forecasters predictions of driving rain and/or snow failed to materialise and the Vets first Grand Prix race of the 2008 season got off to a good start with Harriers securing three individual awards together with an abundance of hard earned team points.

Fiona Strange and Maureen Medlar both won prizes in their respective age groups together with Jean Snelling who once again secured a winning postion in her category. The first man home for the Harriers was John Oliver closley followed by Andy Booth.

Special congratulations to Gill Waite and Marcus Bishop competing for the first time in the 'wasp' vest.

With excellent performances from all the Knavesmire runners the club has made a really good start to this years series by winning valuable points in both the male and female 'All to Count' competition.

Don't forget the next race of this series is at Meltham on the 23rd March. Full details can be found on the Vets page.

We look forward to seeing you there.
