2015 sees the 31st running of the Calderdale Way Relay on Sunday 17th May. This is Britain’s biggest club-run off-road event with around 90 teams and over 1,000 runners taking part in the 2014 edition. Last year, the event included a team from York Knavesmire Harriers having its first crack and finishing in a creditable 38th place. Following on from last year’s success, the time has now come to enter teams for the 2015 event.

The Calderdale Way route follows a 50-mile loop starting in West Vale, West Yorkshire and taking in the moorland and countryside around Halifax, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden. For the relay event, this is split into 6 legs with lengths varying from 5 to 11 miles, with the terrain including everything from moorland paths to country lanes and canal towpaths – something to suit every runner. Each leg is run as a pair, so teams have a total of 12 runners. It’s a great day out with the club, generally followed by food/drink in York in the evening and a chance to catch up with the events of the day.

One team has already been entered for the event, but don’t worry if you don’t think you’re quick enough to make the first team of 12 – we will be entering a second team if we get enough interest from members.

For anyone that doesn’t know the area or the route, we will be arranging days to go out and recce various legs in the months leading up to the event. Some of the legs provide a great introduction to off-road running, so the recce days would be an excellent opportunity to test your off-road legs away from the flatlands of York.

So, if you want to be part of one of the Knavesmire teams, find out more about the event or just join us on the recces, email me on ykh_calderdale@yahoo.co.uk.
