Club Runs 2009
Race Reports |
Penine 10k - 04/01/09
report by Graeme Adams
The first club run of
2009 was the Pennine 10k race at Brighouse on 4th January organised
by Halifax Harriers. It was the first race
in their 125th Anniversary year and was an excellent event. To mark this
Anniversary, all finishers received an engraved glass paperweight.
The day was very cold but dry and the
course was typically hilly for this area. Approximately 350 runners took part
and 2 York Knavesmire Harriers were among the prize winners. Remarkably, they
are both called Adams. Sue Adams won a spot prize and Graeme Adams was first
male vet over 65. This was his first ever category win in any race during the 25
years he has been racing.
The facilities were very good, the
marshalling excellent and the refreshments very reasonably priced. This is a
well organised event which I would recommend to other runners. Full results are
here.
Snake Lane 10 mile - 22/02/09
report by Graeme McAllister, photos by David Gowans
The ever-popular Snake Lane 10 mile road race took place last Sunday.
Early entry was a pre-requisite, but despite a few disappointed applicants who
were too late, an impressive 44 Harriers took to the streets of Pocklington and
the surrounding area for the 2nd Club Run of the year. After the cold weather of
late, it was good to get running in relatively warm conditions (although the
wind did make its presence felt from time to time!)

In the mens competition, John Oliver was first
YKH back, followed by Chris Richardson and Sean McDermott, while in the ladies
competition, Kate Nelson was first back followed by Jana Newman and Vicky Green.
The only disappointment came in the ladies team competition. The original
placings had YKH ladies in 3rd, however it was then noted that Chris Richardson
is in actual fact a chap, so couldn't count in that particular comp!

Arkendale 10k - 29/03/09
report by Graeme McAllister
This months' Club Run was held in Arkendale, near Knaresborough. A total
of 39 Harriers turned out in ideal conditions for this reasonably small, but
still very popular race organised by
Must Tri Harder.
Despite being warned that this "wasn't a PB course", many people notched up
excellent, and in several cases, personal best times.
Harrier winners were:
| John Oliver |
9th overall and 1st M50 |
| Janet Cordingley |
1st F40 |
| Lynda Bish |
1st F60 |
| Jean Snelling |
1st F70 |
Congratulations to all who took part. Full results can
be found here. Photo

Rother Valley 10k nr Sheffield - 05/06/09
report by Margaret Brown
It is difficult from the results of this race to tell how many
Knavesmire Harriers attended this club run but as a guess I would say
approximately 25 club members.
I must say this was one of
the most stressful races to run. We had allowed plenty of time to get to the
race, leaving York at 10am and there was no traffic or holds up until we
actually reached the turning on the junction to the park. However, we found we
were queueing from the main junction which was approximately 2 miles to the
start. It took us 45 minutes to go a few yards and in the end had to turn of to
an industrial park to park the car and run to the start. The race organisers
delayed the start by 15 minutes but this put runners under considerable pressure
to park their cars and get to the start. Myself and Margaret Metcalf arrived at
the start with 3 minutes to go having race 2 miles before we even started. I
felt sorry for other runners who had not reached the start and in fact when we
were running many were just getting to the start line. The race itself was ok
but being at 12 noon we were actually running head on in the sunshine and a two
lap circuit around the lake. Having talked to members afterwards some were
disappointed with their time and I am sure this was down to the fact that we
were under so much stress to get to the start, queueing for loos, etc
Apparently last years race was run by about 700 runners this year it was double
with 1700 entered and clearly they had not considered this and parking was a
nightmare etc. I suppose you cannot blame the organisers having been involved
in the brass monkey and organising a local run from Sutton I know full well how
difficult a job hosting and organising a race can be but lessons are to be
learnt if this becomes a club run for next year. Which also highlights the fact
that having two club runs back to back is difficult for members to go to and
possibly more Knavesmire Harriers would have entered had it not been so close to
Arkendale and the distance.
I will end on a positive
note, it was again a privilege to run in my Knavesmire vest with other members
of the club and we lived to tell the tale – just!! Full results are
here.
Well done to Kate Nelson 1st lady
at Rother Valley and to Neil Kingham, 1st male Harrier, also to all Knavesmire
Harriers who got a PB.

Great to
see 51 Knavesmire Harriers racing at Rothwell, 26 Male & 25 Female I love
it when there is a good turn out! I know I say this every time in my race report
but I do mean it everyone did Brilliant. Many of us got a PB which
Rothwell is known for. I woke up this morning with raining beating down and
wondered just how many of Knavesmire Harriers would be running. Fortunately the
weather eased off although at the start it was cold and started to rain for the
first 20 minutes of the race. Well done to Kate Nelson and Neil Kingham who
came first in the male and female sections. Well done to all those who have
just completed the London Marathon over a week ago and out racing Rothwell.
Also to those who are preparing for the Edingburgh Marathon in a months time.
Well done to those members who were racing for the first club run of the season
Tim Brown (my son, although after running muddy boots in the snow Rothwell came
as a breeze) and Olu Jatto and other members. Well done to Irene Wellbourn for
her PB too. Pat Short and Gill Barker were neck and neck followed closely by
Emma, Joy and Maureen, etc. The men did great, particularly Neil after running
London, very closely followed by John Oliver, Martin, Francis and Simon etc.
It was a shame they ran out of T shirts at the end but I gather they are posting
ones to those who did not receive one. If anyone does not get there T shirt
within the next week or so do get in touch with me and I will do my best to make
sure everyone receives their well deserved T shirt. Rothwell was well
marshalled as I could see and I noted that they did cheer the runners on. What
a good start to the summer league and forthcoming club runs. Go for it
Knavesmire !!
This report
cannot go without mentioning our faithful Knavesmire supporters;
Barbara Fawcett, Maureen Adams, Martin Medlar, Rachael Sullivan, Abbey Plunkett
and any others I did not see. I know some of you come with your husbands and
wife to a race but you always manage to cheer the rest of us on too and I for
one value this and I am sure other members who are racing do to. Thank you for
standing around in the cold etc.
Castle Howard 10k
Trail Race - 14/06/09
report by Graeme McAllister
Another great turn-out for this months Club Run - 40 Harriers set off from the
grounds of Castle Howard on this scorching hot Sunday. For those of us used to
road running, it was nice to have a bit of a change in terrain with the race
being run over road, track, field and hump-backed bridge! The hot weather made
this a tough 10(ish)k race, but the route was quiet and well-organised, and the
2-lap circuit meant that the water station was a welcome sight at 3k and 7.5K.
As ever, some excellent Harrier performances, in particular, those who finished
high in their age category:
| Giles Hawking |
5th overall |
Maureen Medlar |
2nd F55 |
| Chris Smith |
11th overall |
Graeme Adams |
2nd M65 |
| Sarah Nettleton |
3rd female and 1st F45 |
Jean Snelling |
1st F70 |
| Gill Barker |
2nd F50 |

Well done to everyone who
took part, and thanks again to all the supporters who turned out to cheer us on.
Full results are here.
Harrogate 10k - 26/07/09
Well done to all those who took part on the "new" course in Harrogate - at least
we got to miss out the hill!! In the ladies' competition, Kate Nelson and Emma
Yates were 1st and 2nd, respectively in the F40 group, while in the men's race,
John Oliver was 8th in the M50 class. Despite the weather not being as good as
could be hoped, we all de-camped back to the Fawcetts for post-race refreshment
- thanks once again for your hospitality!
Full results can be found
here.
Escrick 10k - 23/08/09
Well done to the 42 Harriers who turned out for this months Club Run in sunny
(but very windy) Escrick. This is the second year this has been held, and
provides enough off-road-type surface to be interesting, without the added "fun"
of mud! The first 5 men and women back were:
| Phil Elliot-Dick |
35.56 |
Amy Ross |
49.33 |
| Neil Kingham |
40.53 |
Gill Barker |
51.45 |
| Martin Smith |
41.27 |
Maureen Medlar |
53.02 |
| David Darton |
42.18 |
Joy Allen |
53.32 |
| Graeme McAllister |
43.08 |
Margaret Brown |
55.01 |

Wistow 10 mile - 13/09/09
report by Margaret Brown
Good to see in total 23
Knavesmire Harriers turn out for the September Club run
It was a great result for
Knavesmire with Phil Elliott-Dick actually winning the race Well Done Phill!!
The ladies also had a good result with Gill Barker and Jean coming 1st
in their age category and Margaret 3rd and Anne 4th in
their age category. The race was a nice one to do and the weather was good.
Thank you to our Knavesmire supporters who cheered us on and I was half
expecting Sarah to give birth with all the excitement of Phil winning and all the
clapping!!*
In addition, Phil Raddall was 1st local male veteran, and was the proud
recipient of a shield - many congratulations!
Full results are here.
*A note from Phil:
"....I think the clapping did help as Sarah gave birth to our Daughter (Erin) on
Thursday who are both doing well."
Congratulations from all YKH's!
Jolly Holly Jog - 28/12/09
Phillip Elliot-Dick ploughed his way through the snow and
ice to claim victory at the Jolly Holly race, his time of 37:39 gave him
a two minute advantage over the next runner across the line.
