Club Run Race Reports 2008.
Thirsk 10 mile - 30/11/08
report by Graeme McAllister
A fantastic 52 Harriers turned out at a very sunny
but cold Thirsk for the penultimate club run of the year. This was the
first time I had done this race, and I really wanted to enjoy it. Unfortunately,
a bout of man-flu earlier in the week meant I hadn't done quite the preparation
I should have, and I felt like I was going backwards from about mile 3 onwards!
This course was pretty flat so there was plenty of PB potential - even if the
start was somewhat chaotic. The full results are
here. Apologies for
not mentioning everyone, but there are a lot of names and times to type out, so
if you got a PB or feel you'd like a mention, please
email me and I'll report it!
Richmond Castle 10k – 19/10/08
report by Margaret Brown
A total of 37 Knavesmire Harriers
Well Done to John Oliver 1st York Knavesmire Harriers followed by Neil Kingham
and Neil Holdsworth
Well Done to Helen Blackburn 1st lady Female York Knavesmire Harrier followed by
Pat Boden and Margaret Metcalfe
Well Done to all finishers. It was a hard club run with hills hills and more
hills and finishing on a hill!!!!!!!! - good for us makes us stronger
The start was mad running down the cobbled stones you could hear people saying "oohh
hope we dont slip"
Well done to our supporters as well, Faithfully Barbara Fawcett was there to
cheer and York Harriers who are not running at the moment they did well to
support and cheer us on. A huge thank you to you all.
Looking forward to THIRSK.
report by Graeme McAllister
Another great turnout by YKH (37 runners) on a rather chilly Sunday morning for
this month’s club run. Pre-event rumours suggested that this would be one of the
hillier races of the year, and the drive in (Matt, Dick and I took the scenic
route!) did nothing to suggest otherwise.
The race started in the market place and,
after a rather frantic start (downhill, wet cobbles, sharp left turn at the
bottom) headed off over the River Swale towards Catterick Garrison, before
returning to Richmond and the picturesque finish in the grounds of the castle
(pretty impressive, even if it was uphill for the last kilometre!).
The first Harrier back was John Oliver (20th)
followed by Neil Kingham and Neil Holdsworth. Helen Blackburn was first YKH lady
back, with Patricia Boden (3rd F50) and Margaret Metcalfe (2nd
F55) next.
Well done to everyone in what was a tough, but enjoyable race. It's just a shame
we couldn't stay for the beer festival!
Quote of the day from Martin Smith – “it’s
pretty flat, apart from all the hills” – says it all, really

Wetherby 10k - 14/09/08
report by Margaret Brown
A total of 38 Knavesmire Harriers
Male 25
Female 13
Another good club run
Well Done to all runners - you did your best!!
Another
sunny day (a rare thing lately!), another good YKH turn-out for the Wetherby
10K. In total, 40 Harriers turned out at what was a very popular race (due to it
being the final stage of the Black Sheep series), and put in some great
performances.
In the men’s race, we had 5th, 13th and 16th places from Phil Elliott-Dick,
Kevin Langan and John Oliver, respectively giving us victory in Men’s
competition. In addition, Kevin came third in the M40 (in a PB), and John won
the M50 category.
In the ladies race, Sarah Nettleton was first Harrier back and won the W45
category, while Margaret Metcalfe won the W55 race.
There were too many club members running to mention everyone, but if you got a
PB or feel you deserve a mention, please accept my apologies!

Harrogate Town Centre 10k - 27/07/08
The ever popular Harrogate Town Centre 10k rolled round again
this year and, like last year, YKH has a large presence with nearly 10% of the
total runners representing the Harriers. Once again, the weather proved to be,
if anything, a bit too good as on the 2nd lap, the clouds broke and the
temperature rocketed! That didn’t prevent some great performances:
Kate Nelson was 1st Harrier back, 2nd Lady overall, and 1st Lady F40 in 38:50.
John Oliver was 1st male Harrier in 40:38, closely followed by Neil Holdsworth
in 41:58 and Neil Kingham in 42:11.
Other Harriers:
Ladies: Rachel Sullivan, Margaret Metcalf, Rose Kee, Gill Barker, Margaret
Brown, Jane Hartas, Margaret Oliver, Michelle Atkins, Jane Carter, Lynda Bish,
Gill Gillian, Jean Snelling, Jayne Fligg, Sue Iqoe and Kim Middleton.
Men: Martin Smith, Graeme McAllister, Matthew Page, Simon Drew, Colin Lea,
Johnathan Hampton, John Middleton, Andrew Smith, David Darton, Dick Hunter,
David Brown, Malcolm Fawcett, John Cross, David Bish, Gary Moss, Morris Gregory,
and Barry Carter.
This is a fairly undulating course, with a cracker of a hill at the end of each
of the 2 laps, so in these temperatures, everyone was very pleased to see the
finish line!
Thanks again to the Fawcetts for their hospitality after the race.

Well done to all Knavesmire Harriers who supported this club run.
I received a comment from one of the race organisers/marshalls “thank you
Knavesmire Harriers your club has the largest turn out for this race, hope to
see you next year” |
|
 |
| As you can see Knavesmire Harriers are running excellent this year so far with
club runs and more club runs coming up. I am not entirely sure where this puts
us in terms of clubs position/ranking but I am confident that we will remain
strong and achieve an even more outstanding results for our own personal
achievement and our club. As always I am proud to wear my Knavesmire vest and to
belong to a great club of runners who are committed to running and running well. |

Rothwell 10k
There
were some great performances at Rothwell. Darren Hendley was the first harrier
in, romping home in 35.32. Kate Nelson won the FV40 category in 37.26, with Abey
George-Plunkett just behind, 6th women overall in 38.48. Harold
Dobson was first in the V70 category. Pat Boden and Margaret Metcalfe finished
third in their respective categories. In total, 49 harriers finished,
representing 7% of the total field.
Ackworth Half Marathon, 16/03/08 – report
from Maureen Medlar
This well
supported half marathon and second club run of the year got off to a super
speedy start! Unfortunately not on the course-one of our stalwart supporters got
nabbed for speeding on the A1. He is quoted as reporting that the 3 points were
not the best birthday present he had received but it was probably a PB!
Once again the
Harriers turned out in numbers on a rather gloomy and windy Sunday morning and
produced some excellent performances.
Dave Eiser was the
first Harrier home in a time of 1.18.13. Kate Nelson who
secured
3 individual awards- 4th lady overall, 1st lady in Vets over 40 category
and bronze Yorkshire Half Marathon Championship medal.
The ladies
contingent performed well with Sarah Nettleton, Maureen Medlar, and Margaret
Metcalfe all securing 2nd places in their respective vets age bands.
Special
congratulations to Natasha Hudson who completed her first ever road race and to
Irene Wellbourne who finished her first half marathon.
Happy Easter to
one and all and if you are joining the next Vets race on Sunday at Meltham be
aware of the police patrols on the A1!!
