YVAA Fell Championship
-09.11.09
Ian Bithell was the only Harrier at the Cop Hill
Fell race at Meltham, a
7 mile / 900 feet, two lap trail.
He was first over 65 in both the
main race and the YVAA championship race so got a shield from YVAA, a prize
from The Cop Hill Race and then won two Raffle prizes. "It was clearly my
day!!!" he said.
This years Commonwealth Mountain Running Championships were held in Keswick over
the weekend of 19th / 20th September. Second claim member Lizzie Adams was
representing England in the 8km women's up and down race and finished in a
fantastic 11th place in a time of 44:11. Finishing in second place and winning
the Commonwealth silver medal was Sarah Tunstall, former member of Pete's
training group.
In the 12km open race Barry Atkinson finished 2nd in the V50 age group in 62:10.
On course support was provided by Pete Schofield, Josh Beech and Tom Edwards.
Petzl LAKE DISTRICT MOUNTAIN TRIAL -13/09/09.
Knavesmire's Josh Beech
won the 'Short' 13.9km race at this prestigious annual Lakeland running
event.
The location of the race, beginning this year in Eskdale is not revealed until
two weeks before the race.
The trials have been held in various forms since 1952 and place a strong
emphasis on navigation. Keen orienteer Josh made up a large deficit over the
leader in the latter part of the race to take the lead and victory.
Also competing in the Short race were Tony Stanbridge (50th) and Andrea
Calladine (55th).
Clive Parry took part in the main 29.3km race and finished 22nd.

Despite arriving in
Davos to a good covering of snow, it turned to fantastic weather for
the week and perfect conditions for the Swiss Alpine Marathon at Davos
2009.
We met Duncan at registration
and saw him run out on the C42 +450m/-1070m marathon route as he passed
our hotel. The route is very beautiful passing farms with plenty of
cowbells ringing then through woods, old railway track, crossing the
Wiesen viaduct and meadows he finished in 3.50.40.
We then made our way
to the train to take us to our start as our marathon route takes us
through the higher mountain range with a total climb of +1890m/-1710m
decent. Everyone is checked by the doctors at the two highest points
so its reassuring as the altitude can upset a few people.
It was great to meet up with
former club members Lis Smart and Carolyn Hunter- Rowe (World Record holder
for 100km)
Helen Leach 6.18.03 knocked
10mins of last year’s time.
Paul Adams 7.31.27, 6 mins
quicker than last year, although along way off his best for the course.
Susan Adams 7.37.42 a PB for
the course by 4 mins and 20 mins quicker than last year.
We received lovely medals,
but unfortunately there was not enough of the distinctive technical tshirts
for the girls so we have to wait for them to arrive in the post.
The event is on July 31st
next year and has different distance/degree of difficulty events and is a good
value event because they include travel by train to Davos in the entry along
with the guest card from the hotel giving free bus and mountain lift transportation.

Osmotherly
Phoenix - 05/07/09
Report
by Susan Adams.
We
had a fantastic event yesterday at Osmotherley Phoenix.
Phil Elliott-Dick had a great race finishing first in the 17 mile followed
in second place by Dave Chippett (who still retains his record for the course).
We had 348 runners and walkers out on the moors on a very hot day. The Harriers
were well represented – in no particular order, 17 mile – Phil Elliott-Dick,
David Chippett, Andrea Callandine, Tony
Stanbridge, Helen
Leach, Carol Butterill, Irene Welbourne, Jean Wright, Graeme Adams, Michael
Denner, Kevin Holmes (26 miles) and Joy Allen(26 miles).
Irene & Jean had never done an event like this before and thoroughly enjoyed
it not sure what they will think of the aches and pains that usually follow.
Thank
you to Margaret Sharkie, Pat Rowson, John Weldourne & Alan Wright for all
their help on the day with registration, and at Carlton Bank CP. Also a
very big thank you must go to Jane Hartass and Maureen Medlar for standing
at late notice to marshal the Hawnby check point the furthest out point
on the 33 mile event which had 150+ entrants, the spare ginger cake fuelled
them well for the Burn Valley ˝ marathon the following day.

much the same way.

NEHRA/Northern Runner Winter Series - Final Positions
We
had a very successful NEHRA/Northern
Runner Winter Series taking team prizes in the Ladies and Men's onnumerous occasions.
Notable performances were;
Phillip Elliott Dick - 2nd Mens Overall and 2nd Mens Open.
Andrea Lancaster - 3rd Womens Overall and 2nd Female Open

Barry Atkinson - 2nd Male over 45
Janet Cordingley - 2nd Female over 45

Sarah Nettleton - 6th Female over 45
Jonny Kendal - 6th Male overall and 5th Male Open

(8th), Barry Atkinson (19th / 3rd M45), Kevin Holmes (21st) and Janet Cordingly
(55th / 1st F45)
A tough but
scenic race this one, which claimed a few casualties. Despite this Aislinn Austin
took 2nd in the Ladies , Phil was 3rd in the Men's and the men's team took the team
prize.
3rd - Phillip

Race 9 : Commondale Crossing/Clart
- 01.03.09
5.5m / 600ft Conditions for this race were
far more pleasant than has been the case for some recent events, the sun was giving
out some warmth, the snow had disappeared and the short route featured barely any
climbing, a large portion of the course's 600ft of climb was in the initial ascent
from Commondale village.
Phillip Elliot-Dick took the lead from the start , unfortunately he did not know
the race route as well as some of his fellow competitors. Luckily they were sporting
enough to shout him back onto the correct route when he strayed from the designated
path. If it were not for the navigational errors Phil would more than
likely have won , but the time and energy wasted meant he had to settle for 2nd
(36:49) only 3 seconds behind race winner Dave Smith of Pickering AC, and just 2
sec's ahead of Dan Middlemas in a hard fought contest.
Jonny Kendal (37:44) finished 4th, Giles Hawking 9th (40:08), and completing
the victorious Men's team was Chris Richardson 13th (41:24).
Andrea Lancaster (29th/44:23) took second place in the Ladies race, managing
to fend off Kay Neesom of New Marske Harriers until the finish
Both teams
floundered a little in the remaining snow, coming second in the male and female
categories. Despite this we did see some notable individual performances.
Phillip Elliott-Dick (65:19) claimed second place after one time incumbent Dan Middlemas
lost ground after slipping in the beck. This ice cold obstacle had to be crossed
twice in the race and involved getting at least knee deep in freezing water. On
the outward part of the course the climb up from the beck was up a smaller tributary,
whose steep snow and ice encrusted bracken covered sides meant the best route was
to run in the stream for the best footing. This proved to be a very exhilarating
descent on the return leg.
Jonny Kendal (66:21) ran well in the ankle deep snow and ice to finish 4th, Josh
Beech (70:05) was 15th, Giles Hawking (73:19) 21st, and Chris Richardson (73:47)
23rd.
Aislinn Austin (47th / 83:29) was 2nd in the Female Open (FO) category, just
ahead of Andrea Lancaster (48th/83:29/3rd-FO) who fell on the treacherous final
descent to the finish. Janet Cordingley placed 2nd in the
F45 competition and was 76th overall with a time of 91:46.
NEHRA/Northern Runner Winter Series Race 7:Clay
Bank East - 11.01.09
8.5m / 870ft
Knavesmire
claimed both the Men's and Ladies team prizes, with probably one of our biggest
turnouts in the league so far. Thirteen Harriers braved the numbingly cold
conditions to be rewarded with a challenging run that reached the highest point
of the North Yorkshire Moors at Round Hill.
In the Men's
Race:
(1st 4 count for team prize)
3rd Phillip Elliot-Dick 40:32
8th Jonny Kendal

9th Thomas Watson 42:29
12th Barry Atkinson 43:05
16th Kevin Holmes 43:37
20th Dave Chippet 44:26

51st Andrea Lancaster (5th female)
57th Sarah Nettleton (3rd F45)
74th Janet Cordingley (4th F45)
NEHRA/Northern Runner Winter Series Race 6:Captain
Cook's (Great Ayton) - 01.01.095.3m / 885ft Matt Speake got his year off to a flying start with victory at this
popular event and his second win on the trot. His time of 30.53 over the 5.3
mile route which climbs 885ft to Captain Cook's monument was the fastest for several
years.
His winning margin of 40secs over Jim Bulman of host club North Yorkshire Moors
was also pretty emphatic and the remainder of a good field were left trailing in
his wake. Not bad after celebrating New Years Eve pretty enthusiastically at a party
held at Carlton Bank and then camping out overnight high in the North York's Moors.
Second home for YKH was Phillip Elliot-Dick, running well with 7th place in 33.32.
Insane club members and race entrants who chose to camp out on a freezing
night pre race were:
15th Jonny Kendall 35.16
17th Barry Atkinson 35.23 (3rd in age cat')
66th Caroline Warrington 40.11 (3rd female and possibly first home in fancy
dress!)
85th Josh Beech 41.28 (1st in still looking really rough from last night cat')
Also running, but preferring the comforts of home pre-race were Giles Hawking (28th-36.39)
and Darren Hendley (30th-36.59)
All were rewarded with a fantastic start to the new year, the race atmosphere was
very friendly, plenty of runners (256), and the views of the frosted landscape from
the hilltop were very spectacular.
