Glaisdale Rigg Fell Race – Report

Glaisdale Rigg – N.Runner/NEHRA Winter Series 2013-4             RESULTS

York Knavesmire Harriers fell running renaissance continued to gather pace at the 8 mile Glaisdale race. It was once again very encouraging to see such a healthy number of club members ( 10 ) enjoying the thrill of blasting across the Moors.

Quantity was matched by quality, Chris Roberts was 2nd overall  and Anwen Darlington 2nd of the Ladies and 15th overall. With 4 runners in the top 10 we easily won the Men’s team competition, and thanks to our strength in depth also had the 3rd placed team. Barry Atkinson was 1st M50.

This was the 12th of 15 races which comprise the Winter series, so far Chris has run in every one aswell as all the Cross Countries. He is currently the series leader both in the Overall and Open Male Cat’s, whilst Giles Hawking leads the M40 cat’. Competition is very close however and with 3 races to go nothing can be taken for granted, as some other runners have not yet done their 8 races to count.

Whilst Chris and Giles nervously look at the League tables to see who might de-throne them, Barry Atkinson is roaring up the standings in the M50 group, currently in second place he has not yet run the full 8 races to count so looks to be in a good position to rise to the top.

Andrew Johnson is nestled nicely in second place in the N55 Cat’, and the club is second in the Series Team Competition, behind Esk Valley.

The next races in the Winter Series are :

23/03/13  Blakey Blitz
13/04/13 “Gisborough” Moors
27/04/13 Fox and Hounds Chase

Blakey blitz and Guisborough Moors are pretty tough races and probably not a good entry point for the novice, however Fox and Hounds is relatively tame, and goes around a very scenic valley near Castleton, a good warm up before the Summer Series begins with the Carlton Challenge on May 7th.

Should you fancy giving it a go and would like some info or help with transport please contact Chris or Giles, please remember to check the Esk Valley Website for kit requirements, you will be disqualified if you don’t carry the correct gear. Typically you need bumbag, with full waterproof cover, map, compass (know how to use it too!), whistle, hat and/or buff and gloves, add emergency food and drink for long races
