Why run with Knavesmire?

I suddenly found a group who enjoyed the things I did… the sort of people I wanted to spend time with (Neil Holdsworth)

 CLUB NEWS 2008.

RACE HOSTED BY YORK KNAVESMIRE HARRIERS, WEDNESDAY 30TH JULY 7.30PM
Permit Number: 10265

Race

On behalf of the Yorkshire Veterans Athletics Association, York Knavesmire Harriers are hosting the 8th Monthly Grand Prix race of 2008. All members aged 35 and over are asked to support their club by competing in the race. Everyone who finishes the race earns points for the club. If we have a good turnout we have a chance of winning team prizes for the series. It promises to be a really good night so do please turn up and give it a go. The races are suitable both for beginners and experienced runners alike. There will be a number of familiar faces helping out and offering lots of support and encouragement.

Details

The race starts at 7.30pm at the beginning of the cycle path behind the Knavesmire. Entry is £2.00 on the day and you will need to attend HQ (Hamilton Panthers Clubhouse on the little Knavesmire), preferably no later than 7.00pm to pay and register. If you haven't entered a Vets race yet this year you will need to fill in a short form and be allocated a number. To save filling in a form on the night you can enter your details online at any time before the race by going to www.yvaa.org, clicking on the link for the 2008 Grand Prix and following the instructions. You can access the results for the race last year from the same page.

A room at The Knavesmire pub has been booked for post race presentations, spot prizes and a raffle. All York Knavesmire Harriers are asked to contribute a plate of food. Please deliver your plate of food to the Knavesmire pub before the race if possible.

The Course

The course follows the cycle path past Bishopthorpe and over Acaster Lane. (If you have gone over the river thn you have gone too far) Immediately over Acaster Lane take the steps on your left down off the cycle path and turn immediately right towards the river. Upon reaching the river turn left and follow the river heading back towards York. Keep going until you reach The Palace at Bishopthorpe. You will need to run around the Palace by going left up Chantry Lane, turning right along Bishopthorpe Road until you have passed the Palace, then right again down the path immeditely after the Palace until you are back by the river. Turning left, follow the river again towards York (along the Pennine Trail) over a couple of styles until you come to the finish which is in the field off Bishopthorpe Road opposite Terrys. The length of the course is approx 5.7 miles. There will be marshals along the route on the night.

All club members aged under 35, or over 35 and injured, are asked to volunteer to assist with marshalling or other roles. If you have family and friends who will also volunteer please let us know. We can be contacted as follows:

Big congratulations to Paul Adams and Michelle Atkins who both ran 10 marathons in 10 days! This is a fantastic achievement, and we hope to have more information on the website soon... Sue Adams also managed to run 5 marathons in 5 days, before having to retire due to injury.

You can read more about these phenominal achievements at the website http://www.brathaychallenge.co.uk/

A message  from the new ladies Vice Captain.

I would like to take this opportunity to say Hi to all the Ladies of Knavemsire Harriers. I have the privilege of being your vice captain. Abbey Plunket is Ladies Captain and cannot be in two places at once. Abbey can usually be found supporting the ladies down at the track at the University on a Thursday evening and supporting the Ladies at all the various races e.g. cross country and training. If you are interested in cross country, I would encourage you to go along on a Thursday evening to the track at the university or get in touch with her. I on the other hand will be down at the club to run mid week. I help to lead the Monday and Thursday night runs and I would love to meet you all, I cannot promise to remember all your names but none the less it would be good if you could introduce yourself to me, if there is anything I can help you with please feel free to ask and if I don’t know the answer I will do my best to find out or point you in the right direction. York Knavesmire Harriers is a fantastic club with training nights to suit all levels. I look forward to meeting you and I wish you all a good running year.
Margaret Brown
