Alternative Club Run
From Maureen Adams...
On a crisp December morning some members of York Knavesmire
Harriers donned their best Santa gear and ran along the river bank in York to
raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. Here they are before the race.
Note the special "go faster Santa tipple" which Bill is clutching.
The men's team was led home by Bill Shively, followed by Graeme Adams and Mick
Corringham. Carys Murray led the ladies team.
London Marathon Draw
Send your London Marathon rejection slips to Jean by 11th December if you want
to be included in the draw. No phone calls please. Make sure you fulfill all
criteria.

Congratulations to Pete Schofield who was voted 'Coach of the Year' at
the York Evening Press Annual Sport Awards. Pete's award recognises his
dedication to the club, turning out every Tuesday and Thursday come rain or
shine (as well as at races), to lead the training sessions and offer advice and
support to our athletes.
Kim Critchley was short-listed in the Athlete of the Year category, but finished
runner-up to Rich Caddon, Thai boxer.

Harold's GB call up.(report)
Just returned from Northern Ireland after competing in the international X/C
held around the picturesque
grounds of Stormont castle on a very pleasant undulating grassland course in
very windy conditions. The whole event was very well organised by the N I V A A.
including the presentation evening attended by approx 500 people.
On my England debut I was 2nd in m70 age group [silver] & we got 1st team
[gold], I am happy with my performance hampered slightly with a hamstring strain
& running against some good strong opposition.
Regards.Harold
Dobson.
Congratulations to Harold Dobson who has been selected to represent England in
the m70 age group at the BRITISH & IRISH MASTERS INTERNATIONAL CROSS
COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS STORMONT ESTATE, BELFAST, 17 NOVEMBER 2007.
Kate's Winning Ways
Well done to Kate Nelson who won the Harewood Trail race on 7 October, (Cameron
Brookes was 2nd male in the same race).
The following weekend Kate came second in the Brid
Half-Marathon, running 1:22.51. This performance saw Kate clinch Gold in the
Yorkshire V40 Half Marathon Championships.
Late September Gold rush.
Congratulations to Harold
Dobson who won m70 gold in
the British Masters Championships held in Newtown, Wales on 30-09-07. time
40-00m.
Kim Critchley won the
Horsforth
10k (30.09.07) with a time of 33mins 4 seconds. With the second placed
runner finishing in 34:05 he was cutting that one a bit fine.
First two
weeks of September
The first two weeks of September have, as ever, turned out to be very busy for
Knavesmire Harriers, with members competing in disciplines ranging from fell to
road, triathlon to cyclo-cross, across the country and indeed world. There have
been a number of victories and noteworthy performances:
 | Abey George-Plunket took first place at the
Northwest triathlon. This is a sprint
triathlon, with 500m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. Abey’s spectacular
performance (finishing in a time of 1:10.35) was backed-up by good
performances by Andy Neale, whose return to form continued with him placing
126th, and Katie Godfrey who finished 43rd out of 181. |
 | Two YKH's ran in the tough part-fell, part road
Yorkshireman Half Marathon on 9th
September– Alayne Finlay was 6th woman in 1:53.54, while Rachel
Percy was 89th |
 | Carolyn Warrington ran in the
Budapest Marathon in early September. On an extremely hot day,
Carolyn finished in an impressive 1:32.05 (31st woman). |
 | Darren Hendley ran the
Langdale Half Marathon in 1:28.50. This is an impressive time for
a hilly course run during torrential rain. |
 | Aislinn Austin and Jonny Kendal both completed the
Helvellyn Triathlon. This has officially
been voted the UK’s 8th most gruelling triathlon. It includes a
mile swim through Thirlmere, a 38 mile hilly cycle (which includes the
ascent of ‘the struggle’) and a nine mile run up and down the 950m Helvellyn
itself. Aislinn finished in just under 5 hours in 11th place,
while Jonny finished in 4:45. |
 | Continuing the cross-training theme, Kim Critchley
finished 30th at the Wakefield
cyclocross (Kim is currently preparing for the 3 Peaks Cyclocross
event at the end of the month as a warm-up for the x-country season) |
 | Fiona Strange won the
Sutton Seven race, while Neil Strange was
second man and first V45. Billy Shivers was third man, although technically
he was wearing the wrong vest to get a mention on these pages…. |
 | At the Pinchenthorpe Fell
Race on 2nd September, Alayne Finlay was 4th
woman while Janet Cordingley won the V45 category. Janet looks set to win
the V45 category for the overall NYM Summer series. |
 | Dave Eiser, Barry Atkinson and Giles Hawking
competed in the Three Shires fell race
from Little Langdale on 15th September (13 miles and 4000’
ascent). Dave Eiser finished in the top 20.
Giles took the term "fell race" too literally again and slipped on the final descent
just after the summit of Lingmoor fell 1410' , cutting a deep gash in his knee
which was to require some internal and 9 external stitches. Thanks to the
assistance of some very kindly spectators from Bolton who patched him up, Giles
was able to hobble down the mountain to the finish. Giles would like to
thank them greatly as he would have been royally up the creek without their
help.
Barry had a good run, although the
results have not been released yet. |
 | Congratulations to the Ladies who won the team prize at Wetherby. |
New Club Jackets
You can now get great new club jackets- ideal for warming-up or training in
colder weather. Features of the jackets are: • Soft peach finish polyester
fabric with Teflon treatment to enhance durability • Stain Resistant • Rain
Resistant • 2 large pockets • 360° Scotchlite Reflective Tape. Darren will have
one with him at this weekends Wheldrake 10k, so you can ask him for a closer
look, or see photos below (click on photo to enlarge).
If you want a jacket, contact Andy Neale on 07766747834.
The jackets are available s, m, l, and I think extra small and extra large as
well. They cost £37, cheques payable to Knavesmire Harriers.

London Marathon
Marshalls 2007
Once again we would like to thank Mark Sullivan and his team of marshalls for
all their sterling work at this year's London Marathon. The club has received a
cheque for £150 from the race organisors in recognition of their efforts. This
money will once again be added to the money raised at the Club Predictor Run on
July 25th, and sent to the local branch of the British Heart Foundation.
Graeme Adams, Treasurer
May 7th- 13th- One week; 128 races
One average week in the life of Knavesmire Harriers shows just how active our
members are.
Sunday 7th saw 12 Harriers competing in the Fountains 10k,
including Harold Dobson first in his category and Jean Snelling second in hers.
At the same time, Graeme McAllister, John Cross, Sharon Williams, Rob Cooper and
Stephanie Cooper were at Kirkbymoorside, running the 10k there.
The racing continued throughout the week. Ian Anderson flew
the Knavesmire flag at the Belfast Marathon, running 2:53 as a training run in
preparation for his 100k race in a few weeks. On Tuesday, 63 harriers turned out
on a slightly grim night to run in the first summer league 10k, and on
Wednesday, 8 YKH's were running in St.
Bede's second 5k race.
The following Sunday, 31 Harriers ran in the tough Ripon 10
mile race. Philip Elliot-Dick was 7th in a shade over the hour, closely followed
by Neil Strange who won the V45 Category, 9th overall. Janet Cordingley was
first home for the women. The same morning, Knavesmire's men won the team prize at the
Lordstones fell race. Meanwhile,
Zoe Davis, Ed Walker, Katy Godfrey and Simon Dixon were all in action at the Beverley
10k.
So in just one fairly average week, Knavesmire Harriers ran 128 races
(and I'm sure I will have missed several others), covering a distance
of 1462km (which is 12km further than the 'as the crow flies' distance from
London to Rome!).
The only disapointing thing about all this is that not a single member has sent
anything for inclusion on the web-site! Don't forget, you can contact us with
any information you think should appear on the website (news of good races, PBs,
photos, race reports, etc.) and we will do our best to accommodate it. Its your website, so use it!
Aislinn gets GB call-up
Aislinn Austin has been called-up to represent Great Britain (not
Ireland!) in the
orienteering world cup in Finland in June. Aislinn was selected following
performances at a number of selection races.
Barry and Janet win winter fell series
Both Barry Atkinson and Janet Cordingley have won their respective V45
categories at the North York Moors Winter Fell Series.

City Jog and Malcom's 50th
years of running
Members of York Knavesmire Harrriers were involved with the
British Heart foundation City Jog on York Knavesmire last night- 7 members plus
2 children marshalled, some ran.
Malcolm Fawcett was celebrating the anniversary of his
first run exactly 50 years ago so he just had to run an event on the actual day-
well done Malcolm on this fantastic achievement.
This is the third year the run/walk has taken place in York
and the Harriers have helped since that time. We like to be involved as the BHF
is a charity close to our heart since a well loved member Derek Elliott died of
a heart attack whilst out running.
It is rewarding to see that this year they had over 600
entrants and next year they are hoping for more. They really do appreciate the
help from the Harriers as it releases more of their members for other jobs and
also to run if they wish.
KNAVESMIRE HARRIERS ANNUAL DINNER DANCE
The annual dinner in February was a great success, attended by over 100
people. Here are some pictures and congratulations to all those who won awards.
Look out for news of other social events as they are arranged.
