Cyprus International Challenge
Super Vet Harold Dobson took victory in the M70 category (by 24 minutes) at the strenuous
Cyprus Challenge
which took place between 26-29 November.
Harold said the event was "very very
hard (for me) especially the hill climb runs".
The event comprised:
Nov 26th. 6km flat road race.
27th. 11km hilly trail race.
28th. 1/2 marathon, very long steep climbs.
29th. 10km flat fast road race.
Lots of Success!
Over the last 2 weeks
Knavesmire have been picking up many prizes.
Here is a list and well done.
Robyn Oldham came second
in the Snowdon Marathon this weekend (25/10/09)!
Shaun Lee Johnston 10 mile off road. John Oliver took 1st place in the
men's 50 category.
Richard Lowson took 7th place overall at Richmond 10k with 3rd in his age
category.
McCain 10k race at Scarborough 11th October, Graeme Adams first male vet
65.
Bridlington 1/2 marathon: A number of prizes came to Knavesmire
with:
Kevin Langhan 2nd (m45)
John Oliver 3rd (m50)
Neil Holdsworth 2nd (m55)
Harold Dobson 1st (m70)
Jean Snelling 2nd (f70)
Giles Hawking started the winter fell series well and took 5th overall on the
fells in the Saltersgate Gallows 8m/1200ft.
Kate Nelson;
1st Lady in Chesterfield Spire 10 on 30 August
2nd lady in the Clumber 10k in early October - dreadful time though as was ill
half-way round.
3rd lady (and 1st in Vets 40) in Worksop Half on 25 October in 1.27 (despite the
weather blowing a hooley all the way round,
and it being my first 13 miler since March). Martin Smith and Garry Moss from
Knavesmire also competed and did a good
show for Knavesmire. Martin did 1.33 I think.
Other News: Matthew Speake who is 1st claim for Knavesmire on the road
took 2nd place for Dark Peak in the British Fell Relay Championshps and
2nd Claim Member Lizzie Adams won the Ladies race for Dark Peak
Men's Health Survival of the Fittest - Nottingham
10/10/09
|
What’s “Survival of the Fittest”? First of all, it’s a 12km (ish) race
held in one of 3 cities – Cardiff, Edinburgh, or in this case,
Nottingham. So far, so good. Now add in the fact that every kilometre
or so there is an obstacle. Next, add a river crossing, assault course
or 8 foot wall and you’re beginning to get the picture……. |
 |
|
 |
A total
of 7 of us journeyed to Nottingham in the early hours of Saturday. 6
taking part – Richard Yeomans (it was all his idea), Gillian Punton,
Paula Fawcett, Simon Drew, Simon Rycroft (not a YKH just yet!), and
Graeme McAllister, with Neil Kingham official photographer and lead/only
cheerleader!
With
3000+ taking part, we were set off in waves of 350 at 15 min intervals.
The 2 Simons and Graeme went in the first wave, and were back battered,
bruised, muddy and bloody just in time to cheer off Richard, Paula and
Gillian in their race.
|
 |
 |
|
|
Words can’t describe how much of a blast this race was –
Richard commented that he had a grin like Cheshire cat throughout the
entire time and that just about sums it up. Massively inventive
obstacles ranging from inflatables, scaffolding, tunnels through swamps,
burnt out Metros, the entire National Watersports Centre, and even
Nottingham Forrest stadium to name a few, meant that you never knew what
was coming next. |
 |
|
|
After a bath AND a shower we had a
great night out in Nottingham, sampling the beer, nightlife, curry, and
learning a bit more about one of the party than we really needed – all
I’m saying is “Alligator Thong”!
The general
consensus was that we’ll definitely be back for more next year – in
fact, a few are considering all 3! Will YOU be there??? Check it out at

Sutton 7 - 27/09/09
report by Margaret Brown
Thank you to
all of the 13 Knavesmire Runners who supported this local York Rrce.
For me on a personal note, as I live in the village and am part of
the organisation of the Sutton Seven Group, we appreciated those of
you who turned up to run and support the local community. Well done
to Giles Hawkings who finished 3rd male overall in the
race followed by Neil Kingham, David Darton, Tim Brown, Colin Lea,
Ian Bithell, David Brown, Stuart Ambler, Margaret Brown, Malcolm
Fawcett, Paul and Sue Adams, and Jane Thompson.
Weather
conditions were good and the course was flat and being a local
village in York it was nice to travel not too far. A great tea tent
with cakes was very welcome at the finish and to receive a mug,
banana, mint cake and fluorescent arm band was very much
appreciated.

Inter
Region Half Marathon Championships, Nottingham, Sept 13th
The
Yorkshire & Humberside Squad triumphed at the above event in a
'win-win' situation at the weekend. The team enjoyed a very
successful outing at the 2nd annual Inter Region Championships held
in conjunction with the Robin Hood Half Marathon in Nottingham.
Both male and
female victories came from the team in the form of Darran
Bilton (4th overall) in 69.02 and Sarah Jarvis
(2nd lady overall) in 79.55. The men's team also triumphed, beating
East Midlands which had to settle for second out of the nine
regions, with Bilton, Otley's Ian Fisher (7th
overall) in 70.14 & Leeds City's Mike Burrett (12th
overall) in 72.00.
Bingley's
Sarah Jarvis' amazing run in a time of 79.55, beaten only by Kenya's
Joyce Kirui, was supported by Knavesmire athlete Robyn
Oldham (10 lady) on 87.26 & Swaledale's Erika
Johnson (11th lady) in 89.24, to finish 2nd ladies team.
The race
attracted over 6000 athletes so it is not surprising that team
manager & Leeds City athlete Bilton was absolutely delighted with
the squad's performance. He complimented the athletes on their
commitment, enthusiasm & outstanding performances.
Predictor Race and BBQ - 31/08/09
Thanks to all who came along
to the Predictor and BBQ. - despite it being a little short
notice, competing with Spofforth 10k (which we had not realised was taking
place until late) and the Bank Holiday plus of course the damp and cold
weather. An enjoyable time was had by all who came and ran, spectated or
assisted
Thanks to Barry who went to
the half way point to ensure no-one hid behind a tree or thumbed a lift
there and back!!
The run was quite windy and
took some people longer than they had predicted - no watches being allowed
although we may have to get Terry's clock blacked out another year!!!
However Caroline Warrington emerged the winner of the trophy and prize She
ran the 10k in 47 dead - the actual time she had predicted - a great run.
Second was Mavis Langham-Young who ran only 24 seconds less than her time
and third Paul Adams who ran 32 secs more than his predicted time. Wooden
spoon winner was Darren Hendley who ran a great 10k in 36.35 but this was
5mins 25s less than his predicted time!
Our guest winner of the
trophy and prize was Nicholas Langan who had predicted 45m but took 48.02
He had originally wanted to prdeict 48 but his dad persuaded he could run
faster!!! Sorry Nicholas we had to drink your wine!! The guest wooden
spoon winner was Nicola Fox who was very happy to receive the spoon as she
ran 5 mins 25s faster than she had predicted!
The sun then shone on us and
stayed with us for the afternoon. Despite the wind all the BBQs
co-operated and everyone had a good meal - there were a few burnt offerings
but people had brought enough to feed the 5,000!
We then enjoyed a game of
rounders Andy's team versus Jean's team. Jean's team having a few crocked
players poor Kevin had an awful lot of running to do He said it was good
cross training Andy's team claimed a win with 32 and a half rounders but
this was a little suspect
It was agreed a good time was
had by all and we should repeat the event - possibly with the game of
rounders before the BBQ when we had not all eaten too much!!

Spofforth 10k - 31/08/09
Only a few Harriers took on the trails around Spofforth near
Wetherby on Sunday 31st August for the Spofforth 10k trail race. An
undulating course that took on mainly farmers tracks, paths and fields with a
small amount of road, giving a good challenging run for those competing. Robyn
Oldham gave a sterling performance, coming home 1st lady overall in a
time of 40.33. In the men’s race overall winner was Darren Bilton (Leeds city
ac), Phil Elliott-Dick finished in 4th place in a time 35.39 (a
school boy error in choice of footwear, meant that there was much
slipping/sliding whilst chasing 3rd place!!), Kevin Holmes was next
harrier back in 39.06 and Maureen and Martin Medlar came in together in 56.57.
Another good local event and well done to all those who ran.
Yorkshire Wolds Half Marathon nr. Bishop Wilton - 18/07/09
Well done to everyone who struggled up and down the hills at this
local event at the weekend. Despite the torrential rain the day before, the
course was in remarkably good condition, even the off-road section through a
forestry trail. There were a couple of testing hill sections - a long slog
between 3 and 6 miles, along with a final push up Great Givendale between 11 and
12. Those of you who have done the Bishop Wilton league race would have
recognised the screaming downhill finish, ending in the Bishop Wilton Show
ground. 13 Harriers in total took part:

Eccup 12 July 2009.
Having never written a race report I though I
would hang on and see if
anyone more experienced was going to write it! So here goes!
12th July 2009 saw a handful of Harriers making their way to Eccup near
Leeds for the annual 10 mile run. The weather was ideal for running
this early morning race. The race was not a club run this year and may
have been the reason for the drop in Harrier's numbers attending
(although it did clash with the Vets race). This is a fantastic course
bursting with 'little undulations'! Rain the night before meant the
part round the reservoir was rather puddly. The bravest of runners just
ploughed through them, getting soaked, whilst me and my fellow runner
Karen Ireland tip toed round the edges! The scenery on this course is
amazing and is a nice change from plodding round residential streets. I
would certainly recommend this run to anyone who has not done it before.
Well done to everyone who took part (results can be found on the
Abbey
Runners website). Special well done to Colin Ireland who had never done
this race before and beat us in (but only because we let him win!!).
Everyone who completed the run received a rather nice rucksack - much
more useful than yet another mug!!

Staveley Stampede - 21/06/09
Another scorching day gave 19 Harriers the chance to top up their
tans from Castle Howard at
the Staveley Stampede, just north of Knaresborough. In its second year, this
10-mile race is organised by
MustTriHarder, the people behind the
Arkendale 10k, and mainly
consists of road, with a 3ish mile section in the middle over fields, though
woods and round a nature reserve. Luckily with the hot weather of late, these
off-road sections were relatively clean, with little mud (sorry Joy, m*d!).
Despite being pretty flat, the temperature made it tough going in places, but
the BBQ, tea stall and (most of all) Black Sheep beer tent at the end more than
made up for it!
In the men's race, Phil Elliott-Dick was 3rd, while in the women's race, Kate
Nelson was victorious and Robyn Oldham also came in 3rd. Full results are

Congratulations!!
Many congratulations to Michelle and Susan who completed their 10
in 10 yesterday in fine style!!! - and in the pouring rain!
There were a number of York Knavesmire Harriers there to support them plus of
course Margaret and Vic, Michelle's mum and dad and Abey, Susan's daughter. It
was quite an emotional end to their 10 in 10!!!
We also had a couple of runners in the
Windermere marathon itself, Helen Leach and Paul Adams.
I think that you will agree it is a marvellous achievement and they have now
earned a well deserved rest!

Ripon 10
mile - 10/05/09
report by Phill Elliott-Dick photos courtesy of Sarah Elliott
Perfect weather conditions greeted the 225 runners
of the Ripon 10 on Sunday and a good turn out of 16 Harriers took on the trails,
roads and hills around Ripon. As it has been for the past few years Gary Dunn (Thirsk
and Sowerby Harriers) took first place in a time of 55:35. Phill Elliott-Dick
was first harrier home in 4th place (1st in age cat) just squeezing in under the
hour with a time of 59:57, Christopher Smith was second Harrier back in a time
of 1:03:51 (3rd in his age cat). First Lady Harrier back was Maureen Medlar
(2nd in her age cat) followed closely by Martin Medlar and Margaret Metcalfe
(3rd in her age). Unfortunately, due to injury, John Oliver wasn't running to
his usual high standards, but in order to defend his Black Sheep Series title he
had to run the 10 mile race. Well done to all Harriers who ran on
Sunday. Results of YKH are below:
59:57 Phill Elliott-Dick, 1:03:51 Christopher Smith, 1:12:14 Martin Smith,
1:14:54 David Darton, 1:23:35 Colin Lea,

Kirkbymoorside 10k - 03/05/09
report by Janet Cordingley
Thirteen Harriers were at this lovely village event, where the brass band played
and spectators came out in force to cheer us on. There was a short children's
run before the main race.
It was a warm afternoon, with a bit of a
breeze to deal with as we went up the first hill, but two water stops helped to
cool us off. There were a couple of short hills, although it was mainly on the
level. The last half mile was downhill all the way, leading back into the main
street.
Darren Hendley was the first Harrier in,
with a time of 36.36, 7th overall; then Chris Richardson three
minutes later with a very good time of 39.36.
The women took 2nd and 3rd
place, Sarah Nettleton (42.54) and Janet Cordingley(43.23), being beaten by a
fifteen year old from Thirsk. Helen Blackburn and Hannah Campbell came in almost
together in 48.33 and 48.35, giving Knavesmire women the team prize.
This is a well organised run, which raises
funds for the local school. It would make an excellent future club run.
Results are here.
London Marathon - 26/04/09

London Marathon - A Marshalls Story
A few months ago,
volunteering to help marshal the London Marathon seemed an excellent idea, but
now the weekend was here! Standing on York station, with some of the other
Harriers who were marshalling, I realised I had absolutely no idea what to
expect. By the time we arrived at Kings Cross station we had consumed a small
amount of alcoholic beverages and everyone somehow seemed more relaxed! Then
came the tube train adventure. It was so hot and crowded and it amazed me how
no one seemed to get cut in half when the doors closed. Being up close and
personal with people you don’t know seems to be an accepted way of life in
London. We all stayed in the same hotel which was nice apart from the planes
flying overhead all night! I mean they could stop the flying between say 10pm
and 6am to allow us tourists to get some sleep!
The morning of the marathon arrived. We were told to be at a briefing meeting
at 8:30am. Our brief seemed to be crowd control to make sure the elite runners
ran without people jumping out in front of them. Issued with hats, written
instructions and hi viz vests we set out to assume our positions. It was a
glorious sunny day, a bit too hot for running, but lovely for standing and
catching some rays!
People
were soon starting to stake their places at the barriers. Another of our
marshalling objectives was to ‘get to know the people around you so you will
notice anyone acting suspiciously’. This was really a cue to question those
around you about their life history in a very subtle way! I think some of our
male harriers were getting into their roles a bit too much and thought they were
in the FBI with their black hats and shades on. They seemed to have developed a
whole new way of communicating by moving their heads when certain people went
by. I did notice that this went into overdrive when young ladies in short
skirts went past! People who were watching the race kept asking us touristy
type questions – it is so difficult to answer when you are a tourist yourself –
so out came the maps and with true Yorkshire spirit we flannelled our way
through on the basis that once you had got rid of them they wouldn’t be back!
Watching the race is
an amazing experience. The elite runners looked like they had only just started
when they were actually at 12 miles! The wheel chair athletes are unbelievable
in their grit and determination. We managed to cheer a few of our club runners
on if they didn’t whiz past too quick and spot a few of the celebrity runners.
Some of the fun runner’s costumes were fantastic – I really don’t know how they
kept going in the heat. It was amazing how tired and a bit sun burnt you got
standing on London Bridge for 5 hours but the time passed so quickly. We
received a lovely goodie bag with a medal, a running top and various other bits
and pieces. Our hotel had done a wall of fame with all the guests running times
and a glass of champagne laid on for everyone. As you can see from the picture
Karen and I thought we had worked hard enough deserve a photo and a glass of
champagne! We will definitely be staying there next year!
I would definitely
recommend this experience to others and would love to do it again except I have
entered myself into the ballot to run the race next year! If you hear a scream
in October that may well be me having got a place in the marathon!

Connemarathon 2009 22-03-09
Report from Paul & Susan Adams
Link to Race
Website
We were invited to Connemarathon by the Race Director Ray O'Conner for a
reunion of 10in10 participants but Michelle was unable to travel due to flu.
We flew to Galway on the west coast of Ireland and saw beautiful scenery in
the Connemara National Park. The event consisted of a 39 mile ultra
marathon, 26.2 classic marathon and a 13.1 half marathon.
With over 3,300 entries across the events we were all transported out to the
starts by bus. The ultra was a circuit of the Conanemara circle and we
joined by the side of a lake aside large mountains. The course was a cross
between Snowdon and Windermere culminating in a lung bursting climb at 22
miles for 2.2miles aptly named "Hell of the west". Paul came home in 5.16
with Susan some 6 mins behind. Susan's recent foot injury at the dinner
dance which has threatened to spoil her training held up really well and
clears the way for London in four weeks time.
Any one wanting to run a hard challenging road marathon this event is hard
to beat. The organisation is extremely complex and was handled by Ray's team
without fault.
The weekend was rounded off by participating in the celebrations for the
Irish Rugby Team success.
