Dalby Dash -
14/11/10 As the race took place on Remembrance Sunday, a portion of the proceeds were donated to Help for Heroes, the rest shared among a group of local charities. Runners observed a poignant 2 minutes silence on the start line. Back to the actual running, the 10k course is suitable for road shoes, as the first few miles are on tarmac and the remainder on wide, generous stony tracks. The route begins with a relentless uphill stretch for around a mile and a half which certainly opened up the lungs! Much to everyone's relief, it then levelled off and began a glorious descent to the finish. Running in the forest is wonderfully tranquil, with Sunday's wintry mist only adding to the atmosphere. I spotted two other Square
Wasps in the field, maybe at next year's race on Nov 13th 2011 there will be a
few more? My advice is to get your entry in early! Further success for our YKH ladies who won the Ladies Team prize at Wistow on Sunday 24th October. Impressive running as Caroline Waddington (66.53mins), Rachael Lightfoot (74.26mins) and Maureen Medlar (81.56mins) EACH achieved a PB to secure the prize. 13 Harriers completed this, the second running of this flat 10 mile road race on a glorious but sometimes very windy Sunday morning. Our first man home was Pete Downes (65.48mins) closely followed by Martin Smith (66.10mins). With plenty of encouragement from marshals and non running YKH team members, and with double the number of competitors, this was a much improved event when compared with last year. Only one complaint – no cup of tea afterwards!

Burn Valley Half Marathon - Update From the start the front of the race consisted of Gary Dunn (Thirsk & Sowerby), Alasdair Tatham (NYM), Fergus Meade (Leeds City) and Phil Elliott-Dick (York Knavesmire Harriers). Gary took the lead but was caught by Fergus at mile 3 with Phil and Alasdair not far behind, from mile 4 Gary had taken the lead again and didn’t look back coming home first in 1:18:56. Alasdair had moved into 2nd place by mile 7 (finishing in 1:19:37) whilst Phil and Fergus continued to swap 3rd & 4th places up until mile 11 where Fergus took the lead opening a gap and finishing 3rd in 1:20:14 and Phil 30” behind (1:20:46). The Women’s race was won by Robyn Oldham (York Knavesmire Harriers) in 1:31:53 who took the lead and didn’t look back coming home over 8 min’s ahead of her closest rival. All harriers who took part on Sunday should be proud of their runs as the course and conditions were tough, other notable performances were: John Oliver – 2nd in his age cat (1:33:26) and Sarah Nettleton 4th lady, 1st in age cat (1:40:02). Redcar Half Marathon - 13/06/10 In this strong field the Harriers’ results were: Chris Richardson
1:23:23 PB 48th / 1,283 runners and 13th M40. Being a 2 lap marathon, the first lap was very interesting with the half-marathon runners pushing the pace. We had to ignore them as best we could (in the nicest possible way). By the time the second lap was well under way the quote "a horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse" sprang to mind (I did see a pony and trap, but unfortunately it was going in the wrong direction!). On the first lap the hill we had been warned about was ok, by the time we encountered it again at 18/19 miles, it had turned into a small mountain. All in all it was a scenic course and a very friendly atmosphere. There were plenty of drink stations and loos (essential I have found!!!). Viv (Fraser) had a fantastic race and got a PB of 4:55:47, I came in next in 5:21:54, closely followed by Michelle (Atkins) in 5:34:20. Altogether it was a lovely weekend. Well done also to David Goult who ran the half-marathon in a time of 1:56:11. Finally, congratulations to all who ran the London Marathon.
London Marathon - 25/04/10 Thank you to all the marshals too for their support and cheering and I am sure I can speak for everyone it was very much appreciated. One more thing to add. I must have had at least a dozen people mention the York Brass Monkey and how they all enjoy doing the race and reports of our marshalling. It is quite a privilege as I have said before to be wearing our vest at races and known for a great race that we host. : ) I trust you will all take a well earned break, take great care and recover. Margaret ANSWER: Knavesmire Harriers! I know in the life of the Christian calendar Good Friday has a religious point to it which I do respect, so I hope that I have not offend anyone with this report. Approximately 50 members,
including family, turned up to do their training for the London Marathon with
generous hospitality from Dorothy and Frank Holden, and support both Frank and
Gill. It was a great day - along the route runners turned up who were not
running with their family with supplies of water and encouragement, with support
from family members on bikes and at specific points with water. It was amazing.
Back at the start members and family again were there to cook the bacon and
literally within minutes of arriving back from the run I was handed a large
mug of tea followed by more tea, a bacon butty, hot cross buns and mini
chocolate eggs. The atmosphere was BRILLIANT, everyone really enjoying
themselves and it made me think how nice it would be if this was done after our
training nights - but then again when we are finished from our training night at
the club we all want to get home for something to eat, a shower and our family!!
So the social side gets lost. We even managed to recruit a new runner who had
heard about us, and turned up to run and was delighted with what he saw. One of
the many highlights for me was seeing Martin Medlar do a fantastic job of
driving Margaret Metcalfe's car out of the smallest space you can imagine – NO
PRESSURE REALLY but he did a great job – why don’t you ask him or Margaret next
time you see them? Seven Harriers took on the muddy fields around Ripon on Sunday 7th Feb and with some success. Robyn
Oldham took first place in the female race in 41.37, (40 sec ahead of her
closest rival). In the men’s race Phil Elliott-Dick chased hard to come in
second place (36:00) behind Sunderland Harriers Brian Rushworth, who took
victory in a time of 35:14. It was good to see Andy Neale (49:24) out and
getting his shoes dirty and other harriers running included Martin Smith
(43:36), Peter Welsh (43:44), Patricia Gill (55:04) and Helen Farrell (62:09).
York Knavesmire Harriers was represented by a small group of runners at the Dewsbury 10km, a fast out and back course that runs from Dewsbury town centre through Batley and Birstall. Darren Hendley was the first Harrier to cross the finish line (35.16) followed by Ian Anderson (36.27), David Darton (40.37), Colin Lea (42.17), London marathon bound Nick Lawrence (46.08), Andy Smith (51.03) and Mark Raven (51.14). A first York based finisher was Mike Raynes, running back to form in 34.56 The fast nature of the course always ensures a high quality field. This year, Mark Buckingham from Holmfirth took the mens title in a sub 30 mins clocking (29.55) closely followed by the 2009 winner Matthew Bowser from Lincoln Wellington AC (29.57). The women's race was won by the recently crowned Northern Cross Country Champion Hattie Dean from Hallamshire Harriers AC (33.28), followed by Susan Partridge from Leeds (33.42).
