Vet’s Grand Prix Series. Race 8 Dirty Dozen You guessed it! 12 keen YKH turned out for the last GP race in this years series and yes it was muddy! Undeterred by the greasy underfoot conditions, our small but very enthusiastic team all completed this typical vets challenge (hills up, mud, obstacles, mud, hills down, and did I mention mud) without mishap. Pete Welsh (37.33) led us home closely followed by Martin Smith (38.18) both of whom have completed most of the 2011 race series. Well done lads and thanks to all the gents for your attendance this series – you have put us ladies to shame! Kelly Temple was our first lady home but as a mere youngster unfortunately does not qualify for points. I am however pleased to report that she ‘comes of vets age’ next year. Liz Matthews who was reportedly ‘taking it easy after weeks of running upside down’ ie 3 months in Australia -’ ran well to lead the points scoring Ladies home. Maureen Medlar gained a third place prize in her age category (very pretty pink socks) and Martin Parvin won some yummy chocolates as a spot prize which in true vets style he shared with his team mates. Somewhat depleted by injury and the inevitable event clashes both our teams have run competitively all series but have been unable to secure trophy places this year. However a special mention for Ian Bithell who has raced brilliantly throughout the series to gain second place in his age category. Congratulations Ian on a marvellous individual effort and for your support to the team cause. Thanks to each and everyone who ran for team YKH this year and for all those who helped and supported us during 2011. All this fun and all for £3 a race – why not consider running for your club and joining us next year? Next years fixture list is still in course of preparation but watch this space as details will be provided as soon as available Individual race and all vets competition details can be found on the Knavesmire website or alternatively at www.yvaa.org Hope to see you soon but if you need any further details you can contact
Gill Boyton Tel: (01904) 705480 Straight uphill to start the heart, and limbs were racing from the off. Undulating woody and tricky pathways gave way to open moorland with the chance to admire the view if you dared! A short canal stretch with time to catch your breath followed before another steep climb and finally a plummet down to the finish. Well done to all our ‘boys’ - Pete Downes (our first man home), Pete Welsh (our event reporter), Martin Smith (our 2011 vets newcomer), Ian Bithell (our only event prize winner) and Dave Hutchinson (our only second claim member) for making the midweek trip to this race. Great to see Ian Bithell continuing his string of vets successes with 2nd place in his age category. Good running by Kelly Temple who ran once again as a guest. The last race of the series is at Spen on the 13th November at 11.00am. Details can be found on the www.yvaa.org. We have not had such a successful year in 2011 but would love to see team YKH out in numbers for this race so please put the date in your diary.

m.medlar@btconnect.com WOW – Breaking all previous records 250 runners completed this event organised by Team YKH on Wednesday the 3rd August. But running is just the ‘easy bit’! Hosted annually by YKH Vets, this event can only take place because of our hard working volunteer support force. A huge thank you to each and everyone who helped with our event once again, without you it would be ‘mission impossible’. Encouraged and supported by you all our teams secured an amazing 4828 points towards the team trophy competitions with both teams improving their overall league positions. The rain and thunderstorms thankfully held off and with the exception of a few puddles and sticky patches (of mud) our well established ‘river run’ was successfully completed by 64 Harriers. Billy Shively was the first Harrier to cross the line finishing in 35.27 mins in 5th place overall - some achievement as he runs in the M50 category (sorry about that Bill but no secrets in running especially vets when you have to run with your age category pinned on your back!). Billy was just pipped to the post in the M50 category by 3 seconds! Ian Bithell continued his vets success with a 3rd place in the M65 category. What a victory for Emma Yates with yet another breath-taking performance. Finishing as first lady, in a time of 36.50, Emma ran convincingly to beat Pudsey Pacer rival Karen Pickering by nearly one minute securing 1st place in the F40 category. Brilliant stuff Emma. Great running too by Vicky Whitelock, who, running for the first time as a vet this year secured a 2nd place in the very competitive F35 category. Joanne Hunt and Fiona Strange both ran well to finish in the top twenty ladies. Maureen Medlar secured a 3rd place in the F55 category. Great running team YKH – you all did very well! Congratulations to all our ‘virgin vets’ including those who have competed in the yellow and black vest for the first time ever. Welcome aboard. We hope you enjoyed the event and will join us in the future. Why don’t you all run with us again. Our next event is to be held on the Tuesday the 23rd August at Bingley at 7.30pm. We would love to see all 64 (or more) of you again. Any YKH club member aged over 35 years can run to secure points for our teams. Youngsters (under 35 years) can also run as guests. Just turn up, pay £3 race entry, wear your number and your age category! - then enjoy the race, the scenery, the buffet and of course the company. Individual race and all vets competition details can be found on the Knavesmire website or alternatively at www.yvaa.org Hope to see you soon but if you need any further details you can contact our vets captains
Gill Boynton tele (01904) 705480 On a very hot day 8 Knavesmire Harriers ran the 5th race in the grand prix series at Honley. The race boasted its largest field ever at over 200 runners. After two laps of the local playing field the competitors faced a steep climb through a wooded area which at least gave runners the chance to escape the hot sunshine for a short while. The rest of the course mainly consisted of tracks and fields with several stiles to negotiate. The views after the initial climb were very impressive (if you had time and the strength to view them). Gill believed she had seen llamas on the course, but she might have been hallucinating due to her dehydration!!!!!! Well done to Ian Bithell who finished 2nd in his M65 category time of 50.36. Another excellent run. Also well done to all the other competitors who ran on such a very warm day. Please note the 6th
race (next) is on the Knavesmire on 3rd August. Hope everyone will either be
running or helping.
Vet's Grand Prix Series 2011. Races 3 and 4 Pudsey presented the first challenge. The ‘mile+ warm up’ walk to the start gives you an idea of the task in hand – rocky rough and uphill! You also get the opportunity to wash your feet! Glad to report no mishaps with our 5 man team being led home once again by stalwart vet Pete Welsh. No qualifying ladies could make this event but Kelly Temple ran once again as our guest. Well done all. Hope you were well rewarded with the chip butties!!! Meanwood next – Very aptly named. Rock strewn and precarious you need all your balancing skills to stay upright! Good eyesight also helps! Clashing with the Summer League race at Bishop Wilton (hosted by YKH) turnout was once again depleted but glad to report that our star lady vet Fiona Strange ran well to finish as 13th lady overall. Great team running once again by our men led home by Pete Downes, who, as a relative new comer to YKH is improving with every outing. Well done team. Hope you will have more company at the next race at Honley on Sunday the 3rd July. We are meeting at the Racecourse at 8.45am for anybody who wants to share transport For any further details please contact Gill Boynton tele (01904) 705480 or Maureen Medlar tele (01904) 400568 m.medlar@btconnect.com
Vet's Grand Prix Series 2011. Race
2 Phew - Has team YKH been busy!! With 3 10k races already this week you may have thought that the vets turnout for this race would be depleted – but you would be wrong. Made of sterner stuff, 17 seasoned YKH campaigners shook off any aches and pains and completed this run. It was not long after arrival amidst all the pre race enthusiasm that crampons, oxygen and cloud base crept into the conversation? Yep – you’ve guessed it – this race involved a little hill training. With ‘Beeches Brook' about 400 yards from the start you soon realise why the race has been shortened to approximately 4.6 miles (depending on whose Garmin you checked). You are then entertained with a two mile hill climb needless to say over some extremely rough and rocky ground (apparently great for the ankles girls!). Of course what goes up must come down. With a few 100 yards of undulating road perhaps we could relax and enjoy the view and a gentle downhill finish. No way. Off on another lumpy bumpy track only to end up plunging down the same hills we had clambered up! Unfortunately after negotiating all the pitfalls Gill Boynton our captain tripped near the finish injuring her hand but with true vets grit finished the race in style. I am glad to report that despite a visit to hospital and 10 stitches that Gill is ok but she did mention that she might be taking up bowls in the future! The expertise of our fell running duo Barry Atkinson and Caroline Waddington really came to the fore. Barry, 1st Harrier home, finishing in 7th place overall securing a 2nd place prize in the M50 category. Caroline was second placed lady but unfortunately for team YKH she had to run as a guest not yet being quite old enough to compete as a vet. We hope they will join us again and that the socks were a good fit Barry! Ian Bithell continued his string of successes and battled hard to secure a 2nd place prize in his M65 ctegory. Great running Ian. Well done to all team YKH. Great to see you all and thanks for turning out for your club and earning us valuable trophy points. The up to date team and individual positions are all on the yvva website but its early days yet! Take time to recover from these exertions and prepare for the next event. It is regrettable but not surprising that the next two GP races clash with the York Summer League fixtures. The next race being at Pudsey on the 14th June at 19.45 followed by the Meanwood race on the 28th June for which full details have not yet been prepared. We hope you can make it to one or other race or even both! Full details of meeting times will be published soon.

m.medlar@btconnect.com What with Mothers Day and at least 3 other events including the April Club run taking place it was encouraging to see a good number of YKH vets start this years GP series in good form. The new, 5 mile hilly course was a perfect introduction to this years challenge and team YKH showed early promise by securing 3 age category successes against some tough opposition. Impressive running by both Neil Strange who lead our mens team home in 36.57 (great to see you back Neil) and by Fiona Strange who as our first and only lady finished in 39.19 to gain 3rd place in her age category. Once again seasoned campaigners Ian Bithell and Mike McGrath ran well both achieving 3rd place in their respective age categories. Thanks Fiona for the 91 points earned. Hopefully a few more ladies will be available for the next race. Well run and well done to Neil Strange, Martin Smith,Pete Welsh, Mike McGrath, Neil Holdsworth, Ian Bithell and Martin Medlar. You earned a total of 961 points for your club. One complaint was made by Martin Medlar who was disappointed to miss the buffet – just a thought but perhaps he should have run quicker!! We hope that Kelly Temple, Dave Scoreby and John Oliver all recover from injury soon and will be able to join us at the next race at West Vale on Sunday the 5th June at 11am. This is a chance for any YKH member aged 35years plus to run for their club and earn our team valuable points. Win or not these challenging events are great fun. Why don’t you put the dates into your diaries and join us. Full details can now be found on the updated www.yvaa.org Hope to see you soon but if you need any further details you can contact Maureen Tel: (01904) 400568 m.medlar@btconnect.com Don’t forget if you have any news let us know. |
