—40th Athens Marathon.

The Athens Marathon is recognized as the original marathon course and it was the same course used in the 2004 Olympics held in Athens.  The Athens Marathon starts near the battle field area at Marathon and finishes in the magnificent all marble Panathenaic  Stadium that was  built for the first modern Olympics of 1896.

—Dalby Dash.
 ( Full Results – @ UKResults )

It was a fabulous autumnal morning in Dalby Forest for this year’s Dash. A new RD and poet in the form of Andrew was at the helm but the race retained all of its familiar charm and poignancy. A brutal 2½ km climb up House Dale is followed by about 5 km of enjoyable downhill running on lovely forest tracks through Heck Dale. The last mile or so back towards Low Dalby is deceptively tough, with the finish line drawing into sight with a good couple of minutes’ running still left to cover – but thoughts of what this year’s memento might be can provide some distraction!

There were a whole host of fantastic performances from our club. David Morrison and Emily Baines both took second place, with Dave Smithers taking first place in the M50 category (5th overall), Nat Greaves first F40 and Kathryn Dickinson first F60. There were a number of 10k PBs and Steve Hobson, Kieron Niven and Matt Freeman all joined the sub-40 club for the first time.

Thanks to Darran, Andrew and all the team plus Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue for a fantastic event. Entries for 2024 open on new year’s day!

“Dalby Dash 10k race today representing the York Knavesmire Harriers. It’s a great run through the autumnal forest, and the weather was superb for autumn. You couldn’t have asked for any better.
I am glad that this event helps to raise money for @helpforheroes on this and every year it is held.” Andrew White.

“Dalby Dash is still my absolute favourite race, particularly when the sun is shining, and it was brilliant to run it for Knavesmire Harriers this year, and great to see loads of friends there too.” Ruth.

—Hardmoors Goathland Marathon.
Report thanks to Ed Roberts

Not even 27 miles but about half it was made of mud… seems to be a recurring theme.

Some brief notes and highlights from the 26 miles of mudding it up.

A glorious adventure round the back of Goathland had us running along the river and onto some scrambling over 6 foot tall rocks and boulders. The lad in blue in front of me slips and bum slides down onto the leaf littered ground. Feels so adventurous and I start to make friends with Nathan from Beverely.

Running over the fell to Skelton Tower covered heather bashing and most importantly, the slip and slide. The glistening water on top of the sloping grassway should have been a clue that this was a bit risky. On the first step, I slid and fell on my arse with the amazing view of the tower and the autumnal trees over the fell. It didn’t look like I was the first victim of this view.

Next up, we visit the locals. It’s a family of highland coos! Don’t think they were meant to be there but they were very chill which I appreciated considering the size of their horns.

Make my way to the river and the longest mud section in the world. Meet a lad in blue who was absolutely caked in mud and said he had taken a bad tumble but seemed in fairly good spirits. Offer him some haribo and wish him well.

I found Lee who only seemed to get annoyed at me chatting absolute shite to him and offered to let me pass several times but I didn’t have the legs I will be honest. This leads onto the second or third fall over a tiny root, eugh.

On the way back to Simon Howe stone circle we have a gorgeous line of runners leading all the way up to what is labelled a “tourist attraction” on google maps.

Over the crest and greeted by a lovely rainbow sitting in the distance with Goathland.

Should say, so much water and peaty mud.

And we cross the line in the village hall, smash several cups of tea, several slices of ginger cake and think about how much of a good day it has been 🙂
