A fantastic run by Rose Mather at one of the most famous and challenging mountain races in the British Isles.

The historic race dates back to 1895 and is not for the feint hearted, from sea level in Fort William there is a 1360m ascent to the summit of Britain’s highest mountain.
On the upper section above The Red Burn the climb is very direct deviating from the tourist path’s zig zags to instead punish the participants with a relentless scree route, a case of two steps up and one back on the loose surface.

The ten mile  course is an out and back one, so as the majority of runners struggle up the scree towards the distant peak the leaders are already barrelling back  down towards them at breakneck speed, loose rocks and limbs flying in all directions.

Some Scottish runners were wearing kilts so anyone looking uphill would be getting quite  a view!

There is a definite technique to running on this low friction surface, the more you attempt to slow yourself, the greater the chance of a big slip’n’slide. It’s best to lean forward and let gravity do it’s thing, quick feet barely touching the ground and reducing the pressure exerted on the surface.
Once the seemingly endless scree is dispatched there is still no chance for the descending runners to relax, the tourist path has two major hazards, the tourists and the stony path. Full concentration is required to dodge the meandering walkers and to avoid tripping on the very solid and unforgiving stones that the path has been made from.

All the Knavesmire runners lost places on the descent to varying degrees , so we could do with some more practice which is hard to achieve in pancake flat York. Thankfully no injuries.

The chaps also put in a sterling effort, had a great trip up to the Highlands and were privelaged to witness one of our club members win at such a Blue Riband event.
