—FRA British Fell Relay Championships – Broughton, Scottish Borders.
This year the relays were held in the beautiful Scottish Borders and Knavesmire were able to field two mixed teams of six runners, quite an organisational achievement (well done Tom & Aoife).
The relay consisted of four legs, all marked except the navigation leg 3 which would not be marked and competitors would only receive their map and route on the start line.
1: Solo 7.8km with 550m of climb
2: Pairs 11.2km 890m of climb
3: Pairs Navigation
4: Solo 7.8km with 520m of climb
Leg 1.
Despite a high-speed downhill tumble due to a confusing course competitor crossing, Gareth Green brought YKH team 2 in first with a time of 44:58 for 60th place, less experienced fell runner Emily Baines had shoe lace troubles but still ran an awesome leg to get YKH team 1 home in 49:43 for 95th place.
Leg 2.
We were now set up for a ‘YKH Royal Rumble’, would YKH Team 2’s fell veterans Barry Atkinson and Giles Hawking be able to keep ahead of the Team 1 ‘young guns’ Glynn Ellwood and Ewan Sewell.
Some dogged and determined running by all involved over a gruelling leg meant in the end it was pretty close, Team 2 kept ahead of Team 1 but their 4 minute lead had been reduced to a minute and a half.
Team 2 (Giles and Barry) 01:30:13 Leg 91st Team 2 now 80th.
Team 1 (Glynn and Ewan) 01:26:59 Leg 82nd Team 1 now 82nd.
It’s no fun being the ‘slower’ partner in a fell relay pairs leg, Baz keeled over on the finish line and an ‘under the weather’ Glynn was not his usual exuberant self for quite some time, no lasting damage though.
Leg 3- Navigation.
It went a bit pair shaped on leg 3 for YKH Team 1, Tom lost his footing in a hole hidden by the deep tussocky grass and badly twisted his ankle. He still had most of the route yet to complete and despite the agonising pain he soldiered on ably assisted by Jessica Slater, a valiant effort.
They got round in 2:12:51 (171st fastest) to now place Team 1 in 142nd place.
Team 2 had a less eventful Leg 3, Simon Collins and Louise Stringer completing the leg in 02:05:43, 166th fastest on the leg and team 2 now 125th overall.
Leg 4.
It was still all to play for on leg 4, due to our positions down the field our teams would be in the mass start.
A Knavesmire Drag Race to the finish it would be, could Team 1’s fell running debutante Rebekah Thomas make up the 9-minute deficit on Team 2’s super sub Andy Chapman Gibbs.
In the end it was much closer than anyone could have predicted, Rebekah (51:16 / 101st) ran a belting leg, hauling in the deficit to bring Team 1 home in 133rd place overall (5:20:49), with Team 2 less than a minute behind (5:21:29) and in 135th place overall.
Andy 01:00:35 / 156th on leg 4.
In the Mixed Team Category we were 19th and 20th.
