—66th Yorkshire Three Peaks Race.

New club member Rose Mather was first lady at this historic 23 mile Yorkshire Dales fell race. An astounding achievement, especially as it was her first attempt at the challenging event, perhaps aided by some good advice from her mother who was the second placed lady way back in 1984.

It was actually Knavesmire’s Josie Rawes who took the early lead amongst the female competitors, being the quickest ( 33:14) to the summit of the first peak Pen-y-ghent, with Rose (35:41) back in 4th at his point.

However after the descent from peak one and the road section leading to the Ribblehead viaduct the positions were beginning to change, Josie had slipped to 4th and Rose moved up to 3rd.

Beyond the iconic viaduct and after taking a cutting under the Settle-Carlisle railway the race now enters one of it’s most difficult phases.
Runners have to wade through Winterscales Beck , traverse a number of bogs then climb peak number two Whernside via it’s steep eastern slope , a route normally off limits to the thousands who climb the popular hill.

At the Whernside checkpoint Rose was now the leading lady , with Josie 5th. After the no less brutal climb of the third peak Ingleborough and long treacherous descent back to Horton, Rose was crowned Ladies winner with a great time of 3:47:38( 51st overall ).

Josie had also done awesomely well to place 5th Lady, 83rd overall with a time of 04:04:04.

Hem Rana had a tough race after Ribblehead, not comfortable after soaking his feet in the river and then getting thoroughly stuck in a thigh deep bog requiring another runner to pull him out , he was 126th with a time of 4:18:27.

Orna O’Toole was 271st with a time of 4:53:17, another fantastic performance, making up almost 100 places between Pen-y-ghent and the finish.
All four were first timers at this storied event.

Even more success, Helen Cross was first lady, with fellow YKH lady Rebecca Sizer second, Pauline Foot was first in her age category FV55, Stephen Robson 2nd MV40 and Liz Matthews 3rd FV60.
