Pudsey – YVAA Vets GP Series – Race 1 – Report

Vet’s Grand Prix Series 2014

First challenge of the series was the old favorite at Pudsey. Normally held in mid June it is always one of our ‘dirtier runs’. Rescheduled to early February it surpassed all expectations!

A slithering downhill start gave all the competitors a taste of things to come – two woodland laps through every variety of mud known to runners! At least halfway round there was the added bonus of a chance to wash off some of the mud when the route includes a paddle through a quite lively stream. To finish just a near vertical final ascent – even that was muddy.

Our magnificent YKH contingent all completed this assault course without mishap. Without exception they all reported that in all their estimated 150 cumulative years of running this was the muddiest race they had ever had the ‘pleasure’ of taking part in. Great running by one and all. Congratulations to Pete Downes who lead our valiant team home and well done to Pam and Richard Anderson our latest ‘vets virgins’ – can’t promise all the race series will be so enjoyable but hope you will join us again.

We hope to see Stephan Durkin again but if he has eaten the huge box of chocolates that he won he may find the going heavy!

Our next challenge is race number 2 at Honley on the 30th March at 11pm. With plenty of hills and varied terrain this is a really good opportunity to try trail racing at its best and earn points for your club.

Individual race and all vets competition details can be found on the Knavesmire website or alternatively at www.yvaa.org

Congratulations to the 11 Knavesmire  Harriers who took part in the puddle-sey vets race. just getting to the start line with dry feet was an achievement!

The course was 2 laps of a wooded area , once we had splashed our way along a farm track, we entered the woods. Loads of mud and a nice steep climb for us to negotiate, then a downhill section to test our brakes! after running on a flat section we were then greeted by a higher than normal stream , once we had navigated that it was back in the woods for the 2nd lap.

We didn’t have to go through stream on lap 2 , but they had saved the (best) till last a killer hill climb to the finish! it was around 300 meters, but it felt a lot further, thanks to Martin & Maureen Medlar for there support at this point, they got us up that hill!. All in all enjoyable and the pie & peas went down well!

Well done to Pam Anderson, our only lady runner. 42nd in ladies section . a good turnout of male vets (10) 1st home for club was Pete Downes , 2nd ,Steff Durkin, 3rd David Leaf 4th Pete Welsh, 5th Dave Scoreby, 6th Ian Bithell ,7th David Hutchinson, 8th Martin Parvin,9th Micheal Collins 10th Richard Anderson . Well done lads, lots of points scored for club , hope to see you all at honley(next vets).
