—Cleveland Way Relay Race.
4th York Knavemire Harriers 11:11:59
The Cleveland Way Relay is a race on foot around the course of the Cleveland Way long distance footpath (For further information on the Cleveland Way see www.clevelandway.co.uk). The event is run from Filey to Helmsley, the total distance is approximately 109 miles / 176km. Teams consist of up to 16 runners.
We had a cracking day on and around the North York Moors, a great team event with lots of support given to each other, and great organisation of the unruly squad by Orna.
Kicking things of at 5am for the first flying 8 mile leg from Filey was Glyn Ellwood, he handed over to Mel Ellwood at Scarborough for her 6 mile blast along the cliff tops to Cloughton, Richard Walker took over for the 5.5 mile leg to Ravenscar and new team member Laura Patterson had the scenic 4 mile jaunt from there North to Robin Hoods Bay. David Morrison then had the challenging 7 mile cliff top run to Whitby Abbey, down to the harbour and upto to the end of ‘Stage 1’ at the Whale Bones.
There would be a mass start from Whitby at 9am, the only team to get there ahead of this were Loftus and Whitby who take this event very seriously, and were on home turf.
Giles Hawking ran the 8 miles to Runswick Bay, handing over to Rory Henderson for his 8 mile coastal blast to Skinningrove . The next leg of 8.5 miles, undertaken by Richard Purser continued up the glorious Yorkshire coast to Saltburn, then headed inland towards Guisborough for a handover at Slapewith.
Ed Roberts enthusiastically grabbed the Knavesmire baton for a more classic moorland 8 mile run with a dog leg out to Roseberry Topping and changeover at Gribdale. Ed appeared to be on first name terms with anyone who was out walking that day, and even managed a selfie atop Roseberry!
Next up and flying blind with his map left at home Paul Ritchie managed to find his way over Captain Cooks Monument and on to Battersby Moor to complete his 4 mile leg.
Tom Ratcliffe was our final runner on the ‘2nd stage’ of the event, his leg of almost 8 miles finishing at Clay Bank.
Another mass start was the order of the day for the start of ‘Stage 3’ from Clay Bank.
Who better than Bryan Drew, fresh from his endeavours at Pen-y-ghent the day before for the 3.5 mile leg over the Three Sisters. Bryan had possibly the hilliest leg per mile run.
At Clay Bank fresh legged Chris Doble took over for the 7.5 mile trip to Osmotherley, from here a trio of Knavesmire’s Fell running Ladies took charge to get us to the finish.
First off it was Cassie Reed running 8 miles from Osmotherley to Sneck Yate, Mandy Clark had 6.5 mile on the penultimate stage via the White Horse and Sutton Bank, and it was only fitting that Orna O’Toole brought the baton home on the final 7 mile leg into Helmsley.
Those who hung around until the end had a feast of fish and chips to cap off a great day.
