—Cleveland Way Relay Race.

4th York Knavemire Harriers 11:11:59

The Cleveland Way Relay is a race on foot around the course of the Cleveland Way long distance footpath  (For further information on the Cleveland Way see www.clevelandway.co.uk). The event is run from Filey to Helmsley,  the total distance is approximately 109 miles / 176km.  Teams consist of up to 16 runners.

We had a cracking day on and around the North York Moors, a great team event with lots of support given to each other, and great organisation of the unruly squad by Orna.

Kicking things of at 5am for the first flying 8 mile leg from Filey was Glyn Ellwood, he handed over to Mel Ellwood at Scarborough for her 6 mile blast along the cliff tops to Cloughton, Richard Walker took over for the 5.5 mile leg to Ravenscar and new team member Laura Patterson had the scenic 4 mile jaunt from there North to Robin Hoods Bay. David Morrison then had the challenging  7 mile cliff top  run to Whitby Abbey, down to the harbour  and upto to the end of ‘Stage 1’ at the Whale Bones.

There would be a mass start from Whitby at 9am, the only team to get there ahead of this were Loftus and Whitby who take this event very seriously, and were on home turf.

Giles Hawking ran the 8 miles to Runswick Bay, handing over to Rory Henderson for his 8 mile coastal blast to Skinningrove .  The next leg of  8.5 miles, undertaken by Richard Purser continued up the glorious Yorkshire coast to Saltburn, then headed inland towards Guisborough for a handover at Slapewith.
Ed Roberts enthusiastically grabbed the Knavesmire baton for a more classic moorland 8 mile  run with a dog leg out to Roseberry Topping and changeover at Gribdale. Ed appeared to be on first name terms with anyone who was out walking that day, and even managed a selfie atop Roseberry!
Next up and flying blind with his map left at home Paul Ritchie managed to find his way over Captain Cooks Monument and on to Battersby Moor to complete his 4 mile leg.
Tom Ratcliffe was our final runner on the ‘2nd  stage’ of the event, his leg of almost 8 miles finishing at Clay Bank.

Another mass start was the order of the day for the start of ‘Stage 3’ from Clay Bank.
Who better than Bryan Drew, fresh from his endeavours at Pen-y-ghent the day before for the 3.5 mile leg over the Three Sisters. Bryan had possibly the hilliest leg per mile run.
At Clay Bank fresh legged Chris Doble took over for the 7.5 mile trip to Osmotherley, from here a trio  of Knavesmire’s Fell running Ladies took charge to get us to the finish.

First off it was Cassie Reed running 8 miles from Osmotherley to Sneck Yate, Mandy Clark had 6.5 mile on the penultimate stage via the White Horse and Sutton Bank, and it was only fitting that Orna O’Toole brought the baton home on the final 7 mile leg into Helmsley.
Those who hung around until the end had a feast of fish and chips to cap off a great day.

York and District 10k Road Race League Race #4.

Tadcaster’s James Eaton won hands down in the fourth fixture of the 2025 York and District Road Race League on the Knavesmire to rein in Dom Carter’s control of the competition while Laura Thompson is the hot favourite for ladies glory after her second victory of the season.

Tadcaster Harriers hopeful Eaton has stayed right on the heels of York Postal Harriers frontrunner Carter thanks to back-to-back second places but he galloped to gold on Tuesday night with a 32:22 personal best over 10K – a one-minute improvement on his scintillating time at Easingwold last month despite much warmer conditions.

Carter – joined in the top three by Joey Wynne of York Knavesmire Harriers who celebrated a three-second PB of 34:09 – knows one more triumph at either Bugthorpe or Wistow should be enough for the title, though, as his 32:53 was another confidence-boosting career best despite this defeat over the final furlong.

City of York AC’s Laura Thompson got the bit between her teeth on a balmy evening to clock 37:11 for 23rd overall after tackling three laps of York Racecourse’s access road and a homestretch finishing near the grandstand. With two wins she will be looking over her shoulder at Erin Bush from York Acorn Running Club who cantered to a 38:55 one-minute PB, just about a length clear of Knavesmire challenger Claire Jones (39:06).

Even if the men’s title race could yet go down to the wire, Eaton is well-placed for veteran-40 honours as he held off clubmate Darren Tomlinson and Acorn’s Chris Poulton for a third category win. Dave Smithers was just kept off the overall podium but is poised to take the vet-50 crown thanks to his 34:29 and fourth straight success, while Tadcaster’s Paul Millgate and Mark Thompson from Selby Striders show no signs of slowing down and are neck and neck.

Stephen Wright retained control of the vet-60 class with a 40:26 for City, who had Jon Blake in second to damage Barry Atkinson’s bid to get Knavesmire in the winner’s circle. However, John Oliver (45:42) led YKH past the finishing post in the vet-70 battle, where Mark Thompson of Tadcaster and Acorn’s Pete Coe are also in fine fettle.

Emma Winter was once again denied top spot in the vet-35 stakes, this time trailing Laura Thompson by more than two minutes, with Kate Thompson from Knavesmire grabbing bronze. Another YKH star, Hazel Hall, has three vet-45 wins after holding off the returning Katie Wise from Pocklington Runners and Acorn’s Julie Lawn with her 40:54.

Julie Mastrolonardo made it two wins in the vet-55 competition with a 44:16 for City that Megan Remmer (Easingwold Runners) and Rachel Dare (Pocklington) could not match. Gill Boynton is on the brink of vet-65 glory after leaving Philippa Hutton (Easingwold) and Liz Piper (Knavesmire) six and 11 minutes behind respectively with a 48:06.

Tadcaster’s men appear set to retain their 2024 title as Eaton, Tomlinson, Joe Slater, Alex Young, Millgate and Stephen Walker scored just 57 points to top Knavesmire’s 71 while Acorn came up on the rails to bag bronze on the night with 162.

After wresting control of the team race from Selby last time out, Knavesmire’s ladies won again with 27 points from Jones, Kate Thompson, Hall and Helen Gavin. The Striders have some hope of fighting back when the league resumes on the hills at Bugthorpe on June 24 after a strong 38, with reigning champions Pocklington improving to third with their 82.
