—Endure 24.
Thanks to Alan Wilkinson for the report.

Three Harriers took on the challenge of running Endure24 solo at the weekend. Starting at 12 noon on Saturday, participants have 24 hours to run as many 8 km (5 mi) undulating laps of the gorgeous trail around Bramham Park as they can (or want!). Many people would choose to share this task with a team, which is very much an option, but Kevin Blount, Viv Fraser and Ellie Wilkinson instead took it on as individuals. Each had a very different approach which resulted in remarkably similar outcomes.

Kevin had a target of 75 miles (15 laps) and set about this by tackling 50 miles on the Saturday, taking some rest and completing the rest on Sunday morning. The 50 miles were complete by about 11pm on Saturday but some doubt had set in about the ability to manage 5 more laps on the Sunday morning. After a couple of hours’ sleep he stoically returned to the course before 5am and after an initial gentle lap to ease the stiffness, pulled off the 4 further required laps and achieved his target just after 11am!
Viv took a much more continuous approach and was out on the course for very nearly the full 24 hours, with the occasional break for sustenance but otherwise without any significant rests. Her laps were impressively consistent around the hour mark early on, continuing steadily throughout the day and night and it’s fair to say that in the early hours of the morning Viv was among the cheeriest of the solo runners! Finishing at about 11:30 on Sunday morning, she achieved a mightily impressive 16 laps for 80 miles, placing 15th out of 182 in the women’s solo competition.
Ellie also had a consistent start, with the first five laps coming in well under an hour each. As the evening progressed, she gradually climbed the leaderboard and was the first female soloist to reach 60 miles, doing so just before midnight. She held pole position until 4am, continued to knock out laps at an impressive rate and eventually decided that 85 miles was a decent enough return and declared shortly after 6am. Despite using just three quarters of the time available, Ellie retained 6th position in the women’s solo competition.

Despite the brutal heat and relentless sunshine, with temperatures only really subsiding after the sun set around 9pm, all three achieved personal best distances! Incredible achievements – congratulations to all!

Endure24 is a really great event with lots going on and a party atmosphere. Should our club enter a team (or teams) next year? I think so – watch this space!
