YKH Round Up – Week Ending 28th August.

–The CCC Ultra – The Alps.

Lakeland 50 winner Jayson Cavill had another go at this epic Alpine event, it is part of the famous UTMB Ultra Trail Mont Blanc running festival , and at 101 km in length with 6100 m of ascent it is a major challenge in it’s self.
This year there were record temperatures which took a heavy toll on many of the runners attempting the route which follows the trails and passes around Mont Blanc. From the start in Italy at Courmayer , over the  Grand col Ferret (2537m) into Switzerland before eventually finishing in  Chamonix, France .

According to Jayson ;

“A brutal race yesterday in the Alps where I was hoping to go back and improve on my performance of 20th place two years ago.
This year proved to be a very different day, and no excuses really, my legs just didn’t have the umph in them and from the very start it was all a huge struggle to run at any kind of pace. Unusually I seemed to be effected quite a lot by the altitude which saw me grind to a halt and sit down mid climb in several places.

However! Despite seeing my race plans disappearing off into the horizon I decided that it was a time to dig deep and do whatever I needed to finish, I had no real reason to DNF other than perhaps saving myself for another day. I still feel I need the experience of the tough days in big events and this certainly delivered – I can honestly say that I have not felt so crap for so long before, though there were the odd moments of joy and I only needed to look up and see where I was to feel lucky. I even enjoyed the idea that I got to run more of the course in the dark! I also met and was inspired by some other fantastic people along the way
It was a real case of digging very very deep

The hardwork didn’t go unrewarded and I managed to puck up towards the end, moving from 117 at my lowest point of the day (walking 2 miles downhill!) finishing strongly in 51st.”
