––English National Cross Country Championships – Wollaton Hall, Nottingham – Saturday.
Running clubs from all over the country headed to Nottingham for the pinnacle of amateur athletic competition. Somehow we evaded the worst of the weather and everyone had a great day at this historic and epic event, with runners thundering around the parkland, hurdling logs placed across the course and ploughing through the mud and water features.
-Senior Ladies.
The Knavesmire Ladies Team ( 1st 4 to count ) were 29th out of 94 competing teams, with a few of our speediest runners out of action we still managed to assemble a great squad and obtained another fantastic result.
The Ladies ran a 8km 3 lap course, giving it their all for the club to see were we and they ranked on the National stage.
It was great to see several club members running this event for the first time, Emily’s rise into the top 100 runners in the country and Lucy making great improvements on last year. After the race they were all adamant it was great fun.

-Senior Men.

The dedicated 10 YKH runners who embarked upon the 12km, 4 lap course gave it their all for the club , eager and proud to represent YKH on the big stage.

—Heartbeat Hobble Fell Race – Goathland – Sunday.
Knavesmire’s Men won the team prize to keep us first in the overall North Yorkshire Moors Winter Series with two races remaining, Maybeck 3 Crosses and Blakey Blitz. We were only one point ahead of Pickering, this lead to an error on the day of the race and Pickering were initially announced as team prize winners . They took home the beers but in the end we got the vital victory, it was probably karma as the reverse of this situation occurred at an earlier race.

—High Cup Nick Fell Race – North Pennines – Saturday.
High Cup Nick has been called the Grand Canyon of the Pennines and northern England’s most glorious landscape feature.
Very wintry conditions for this one, due to the gale strength winds the waterfall at the head of the valley was being blown upwards and the lashings of hail and sub zero temps resulted in several runners requiring medical attention at the finish.
Matthew Page reports that “Conditions were somewhat challenging for the 2020 High Cup Nick Fell Race from Dufton in the North Pennines. High winds were forecast and duly materialised, but the snow was a bit of a surprise. The biggest challenge came at the half way point, where after scrambling up the Nick, runners had to turn into wind and fight their way along the edge of the valley in a blizzard. Legs were cold on the way down, but all four Harriers made it back to the village to claim their complementary soup and roll. A grand day out!
All credit to the marshalls, assisted by Kirby Stephen Mountain Rescue, who were stuck out in atrocious conditions for much of the day and especially the one who was helping runners ford the river – up to his thighs in freezing water.”
