—Scafell Skyrace

report by Andrew Pattinson

I ventured over for the inaugural Scafell Skyrace in the Lake District last weekend (16th July). A 40 km route with over 2800m of climbing taking on challenging technical terrain, it’s a really tough course. The first half of the race is on mixed rocky terrain with long, steep ups, challenging traverses and loose fast descents. I was around 14th overall at the half way point.
The second half of the race is much more runable, but starts with a steep unrelenting climb up scree and small rocky crags. Although easier terrain, the intensity of the race and some knee trouble caused me to drop a lot of time. I was happy to see the finish line after 7hrs 48mins, finishing 24th overall (14th male).
The race was well run and marshalled. For anyone looking for a tough challenge I would recommend having a look at it, or the slightly longer Lakes Sky Ultra run by the same team over the weekend

For the Scafell race (Sunday) it was a dry and warm day, plenty of people struggling with lack of water. The only checkpoint with water and food was halfway, but possible to refill using the streams. Trails were drying out for the most part.

There’s also the Lakes sky ultra which was held on the Saturday. Weather conditions were grim. Horizontal rain and strong winds were mentioned in the race report, and finishers looked pretty sodden.
